Euro 5 FG for 2011

Not sure how many of you will know this already, but after some research into the upcoming euro 5 trucks due for release later this year, i found out that they are upgrading to a 6.5t GVM, and will be ditching the 4M50 4.9Lt in favour of, wait for it, a 3Lt mercedes motor.
now it has been pointed out that merc build some very high quality, high output/small displacement diesel engines. i think i read the outputs for it were around 175hp and 450nm, so it puts down acceptable numbers on paper, but i think in a situation like this theres no substitute for cubic inches (unless your talking about a chev 6.5, their crap.. :p ), and i cant see a poor little 3L lasting any more than 300k pushing around a big heavy FG. whereas the previous engines (4.2NA, 3.9 turbo, 4.9 CR) are all, relatively speaking, big lazy engines that arent too fussed and (should) last a long time.

my opinion on the matter anyways, be curious to see other peoples.

I have just bought a 2010 fg140 crew cab and I am quite happy to not wait for the 2011. Even the Landcruiser's use a 4.5 L engine.

I can honestly say that I think the newer tech engines have fairly good longevity. I'm pretty happy to hear they are going with the mercedes motor (and why wouldn't they, being part of Daimler chrysler).
I think that Mercedes build a better engine than Fuso, and provided that you use synthetic oil, thay will last just as long as the japanese engine, if not longer and retain thier HP better. Lubrication has gone a long way in the last 5 years, and the synthetics are now becoming more widespread than previously.
we were changing mineral oil every 5K and compression seems to be fine, but the dreaded blue smoke was starting to rear it's ugly head when I left. maybe guide seals, maybe rings....you wouldn't know unless it was pulled down, and that isn't commercially viable to have the machine out of action for too long.
I'll bet the Mercedes will be more economical, but I'm not willing to put my head on the chopping block to say how much more...

yea no doubt merc build nice engines, but surely they could have used something a wee tad larger than a 3L???? how about the motor out of the new mogs, 4.9L, 215hp, 850nm...

sorry, but im just not convinced that a 3L has enough bulk CC for a 6t truck.

I must admit that I have always been a fan of cubic horsepower.
Yes, it is definitely true that they are making some very efficient and powerful small engines these days, but I too question the longevity of such engines.

I have just bought a 2010 FG and one of the reasons for getting this model was because of the 4.9 litre engine; that and the lack of a reburner in the exhaust system.

I guess that time will tell how long these "world engines" will last...

Speculation is always to err on the pessimists side, however, having sub-leased a Mercedes Benz Sprinter 4X4 dry hired to cover for our busy season, I was pleasently surprised how a 2.something litre engine could pull a load. I'm sure it will be a demon.
Being a mercedes, I believe it will probably come with Adblue, rather than a DPD. this isn't too much of a concern, as it requires less heat rejection and the lowering of the combustion temperature to reduce carbon monoxide emission by means of air to air intercooling also adds another carrot to the equation.
