EVIL Cameras. Will you go to the dark side?

I know that these will be extremely expensive when they come out from Canon and Nikon and while they won't replace high end professional DSLR's I think they might be the perfect fit for someone who wants great shots in a small package.

I also figure there will be a lot of entry level and prosumer dslr's on craigslist to pick up at a great price once these become more common. :wings:

What do some of you Photog's think?

how much do these go for?

We have a pentax optio waterproof that is just about ready to kick the bucket, and a sony A300 that we love.

I don't know if those will be a game-changer or not, but they'll eat batteries and generate a lot of heat relative to a modern dslr. If it means there will be a ton of hardly-used dslr systems for sale, then I doubt I'll complain. :) Realistically though, it would be nice to have a smaller camera on my motorcycle trips and I don't think most of the people who buy but don't really use big expensive dslr cameras are going to stop doing so unless the EVIL units are gold-plated.

I've been following these developments for a while, 'cause the idea really appeals to me.

In practice, the ones I've test driven so far seem to be neither fish nor fowl.

On the one hand, I like a camera that can live in a jacket, or if needed, a pants pocket and take good "documentary" photographs of the things I see. I use a Canon Powershot SD870IS for this now -- a deck-of-cards sized camera that does a great job for its size. 3-inch screen.

On the other hand, I have a DSLR (a Pentax K100D) that I use when I want to do "real" photography. The ability to manage bokeh (depth of field/focus) with a f/1.4 90mm lens can't be beat. I've found good lenses to be more important than anything else where creative work is involved. Full-frame sensors appeal to me more from the lens options it creates than the image resolution.

When one of these big lens/little camera products lets me mount whatever **real** DSLR lens on a cigarette pack-sized body, then I'm going to have something interesting. Until then, I'll probably stay with the two extremes.

Is this real enough glass? ;)

call me a cynic, but all that gee-whiz electrickery used to replace a simple glass prism seems like a great excuse to cheat me out of $1,000 and give me a worse image before clicking the shutter. I think I'm a pass

...and as expected, here comes Sony with their's. Not much in terms of specs yet but Sony did say that it will use an APS-C sized sensor (1.5 crop) which is really nice, and alpha mount means Sony won't be introducing a different line of lenses just for this camera An A900 and one of these could be a great combo for travel shhoters.

First off I will state that I am not a 4/3's fan. I am unsure how sony can use a APS-C sensor with the small camera. more than likely it will be just another CCD like most P&S's do. second the plastic mount of the sony pictured will be a bad idea with large lenses that you would otherwise use on a a900.
Personally I use a Nikon D90. it is powerful enough to do most everything I need but small enough to be comfortable to use on a daily basis as I do. Most smaller consumer grade cameras are more than enough for the average user.

Just another CCD like point and shoots? What's that mean? MF backs are CCD as well. I'm not sure what you're getting at with that point. Honestly I bet it will be the same or similar sensor to one found in their mid range DSLR's. As for the plasitc mount, it's just a mock up model, when we get a look at the final camera there's no way Sony will use a plasitc mount. That I'll put money on. As for size, the GF1 is a lot smaller the a D90. I can put a GF with a 20mm mounted in my coat pocket, there's no way a D90 is going in my pocket. Thee guys are apples and oranges.

Personally I really like the form factor of these big sensor, small cameras. When time comes to replace my G9 one of these little guys will be what I go with.

holy crap your actually gonna compare the MF backs from something like a haus with those of a CCD from a P&S. thats crazy. No the D90 is not a pocket camera but it sure as heck will take a lot better image than the GF1. plain and simple the GF1 just does not have the dynamic range of even a small dslr. also those people hoping to capture great images at dawn or dusk are in for a rude surprise with the bad ISO

does the "alpha mount" mean that my a300's lenses will work on it?

if so, it may be a very short decision for us. :) We LOVE our A300. It may be a mid-range quality setup for some, but we've captured many beautiful shots of our family and 3 daughters experiencing the last 5 years that we will cherish for a long time.

if we can use the same lense set for both camera's all the better.
