Ex-rail truck at Auction: bad idea?

Hi all,
Im wondering about bidding on an ex-rail truck at auction. Its a 1994 Isuzu FTS.

Are rail trucks regularly serviced, or generally flogged?

Also, Im a bit hesitant to purchase because there could be anything wrong with this thing!
What are the main things I should check?

Bent chassis?
That is starts up?
Transfer case works?
Nice cold air-con? :)

Buying any vehicle sight unseen is a bit of a lottery. The fact that this truck was not used for it's intended purpose just adds more unknown variables.
Are you feeling lucky?

Mechanically they are usually fine but cosmetically they just don't look after them inside or out if they are using them regularly.
If it has had rail gear fitted then it would be worth having a look at the chassis, they crash the rail gear into stuff all the time.

when i was in bundaberg and bought the FG i put my patrol on the web with one photo of the front LHS
some young bloke answered the add and had no quams about sending up $1000 for a holding deposit
a week later him and his mates turned up to collect the car
He handed over the balance no problem and I asked him
Buying a car is a big purchase for a young bloke how could you buy something like that sight unseen
his response - "if i was a bit younger Id understand"
cheeky little ********
Nothing to do with the thread, but a good story
