Exhaust Brake and Regeneration

My local dealer got in a 2014 FG and I went to test drive it as I haven't had a chance to see one in person.

I only went a few miles and the red light came on. If I recall correctly it said, "SYS GEN". I pulled over and restarted it. The CEL came on also. I brought it back and explained what happened. Seems like it was trying to force a regeneration. One of the ladies asked me if I'd seen a light which she pointed at. It looked very familiar to the exhaust brake icon. The icon is amber and on the top left of the instrument panel. She said it illuminates when a regen is trying to take place.

So...are they related? On my Ram the regens happen quietly, smoothly, etc. I've never actually noticed one. The Ram also has an exhaust brake with a very similar icon on the switch. The FG's switch is on the lower panel toward the steering wheel, correct?

Thanks

on my FG649 there's a lever on the steering column for exhaust brake while driving - linked to clutch, gears, engine running. There's also a rocker switch on dash below to one side of steering column to close exhaust brake for quick engine warming - vehicle can be stationary. The same light on the dashboard is used for both to indicate exhaust brake closed.

Are you sure the lamp didn't display in red, “ENG SYS”, for Engine System Warning?

Here's a link to the Fuso Canter 2014 Owner's Manual .

Yeah, that's correct. I must be getting old.

Ok, it's on the stalk. I didn't think of looking there. I also didn't think of there being a driver-activated regen switch with an icon that looks very similar to the exhaust brake switch icon on my Ram, let alone there being a manual regen switch at all!

Thanks for clearing that up for me guys!

Answering your question regarding relation between the exhaust brake and a DPF regeneration cycle.

The exhaust brake is activated when a automatic DPF regeneration cycle takes place during parking, but the exhaust brake indicator will not be illuminated.

Did an alarm or buzzer go off after the red "ENG SYS' lamp illuminated?

That makes sense. No audible alarm.

If the illuminated "ENG SYS" lamp is indeed red with no alarm and not amber in color, then the dealer needs to run diagnostics on it.

Did you drive it enough to get a feel for the Duonic transmission?

That's what the lady said, also, that they'll have to plug the computer in to see what's wrong, that a forced regen may be needed via computer.

Unfortunately, I only drove it for a few miles so I wasn't able to get a real feel but did switch between normal and eco for a bit. As I was told, and suspected, it rode like crap without any weight on the rear.

Watching you from a ridge. In Alaska. I'm cold.
LOL...and a dealership strikes again.

The regens are done automatically, I've never had a single time that I've had to pull over and do a manual, forced regen. Likewise, I've never had a single time that I've had to pull over while the system does a forced regen. Every regen has been done while driving normally, and about the only thing I notice is that the rpm climbs a bit and the engine noise changes a small amount.

Newer FG exhaust brake switch is the right stalk, push forward to engage EB, pull back to disengage for cruise control, etc. Also, if you ********** the manual regen switch while moving or turn it on, it'll give you an amber error warning light.....

Yeah, they're a Mack dealer and the one guy who knows Mitsus was off that day. I guess I could have read the manual a bit and came prepared but it was a last-minute visit.

Your in a unique position, you have at your finger tips the owners manual. You can review it and ask questions you already know the answers too. Based on the responses to those questions, you can gage someone's knowledge base on the truck. On the flip side, you'll also gain information to ask an intelligent question.
