Expedition Pajero LWB

The manual gearbox came from an L200 2.5 tdi pickup 2001 model. The bell housing is the same as a 4d56 engine so it mated together with no problems at all. The overdrive drops the revs from 3500 at 70mph to 2800 on 5.29 gears. I kept the auto diff ratios, so that when I am not using OD, it pulls a lot better with out having to change down due to the weight. If I'd changed to 4.636 front and rear diffs from a 2.8 diesel, it would not have worked with the extra weight, and I would have been forever changing gear like there was no tomorrow.

The overdrive only drives the rear axle in 2WD, as I figured I do not need the OD when I'm on the trail in 4WD. It switches via an electric solenoid, through a heavy duty carling switch. (The same switches that ARB diff lockers use).

The company I used was OVERDRIVE REPAIR SERVICES, SHEFFIELD. UK. The unit is a re manufactured unit, but most usable parts are new.

Any more questions please ask.

Love the modification, seems really practical. It is almost like a mini version of the GXV vehicles. A few questions if you don't mind:

1.) Did you gain any head room with the extra boxed in space on the roof? Like did you cut open the roof or is that just storage space? (I couldn't discern from the pictures what you did with the extra up top space)

2.) Did it ever cross your mind to make all that extra space accessible from the inside instead? For example expanding the interior usage for sleeping space or moving the RTT and making an access panel from the inside? Or did the structure limit these options?

Thanks in advance, and thanks for the inspiration. I have a montero sport, so smaller body, similar/same frame. All this definitely has me thinking about mine

Thanks for the pics Richard. So, the cargo box is completely separate from the cab, correct?

When you get a moment, could you also post a pic of the sleeping quarters?

1. Sorry yes the space inside the vehicle remains as it was, and above it is my large roof tent, this is where we sleep. Just behind the original rear seats is a bulkhead to make sure nothing would ever come into the car in the event of an accident. The reason for building this also is that everything is stored inside away from light fingers. Also it remains dry, nothing can get rusty like hi lift jacks, and fuel storage is safe and secure, lowdown, and not on a roof rack high up.

Is this not what all the experts say? There is also no straps to fly about, come loose etc....

2. The reason why I did not do the inside area, is that I needed space to carry two spare wheels, and when they are heavy as they are and the size, there was only one place, which was the back.

And anyway, we go away camping to get into the great outdoors? Don't we?, so a bit of rain or inclement weather does not bother me getting into bed up a ladder from the outside.

Plus I have a full fiamma awning with sides and front to sit in when it does lash it down.

I'll do pictures of the bed area, when its dry here in the UK.

Bikes go on the back of the vehicle on a specially made bracket for two adult and two kids bikes, hangs off and bolts to the spare wheel brackets, which are original Mitsubishi. Makes it a little longer but there is ALWAYS a compromise, in any conversion.

FYI, this is a more in-depth photo of what I was thinking and what something like you created could be. Just what I was thinking in my head in fact

Again, excellent work you did, I really hope to "build" off what you have provided and because of what you did I can only hope to add my own features and customize what I need.

This is the same vehicle that I believe gave you inspiration?

So I don't hijack your thread I started one discussing what expedition boxes could be useful for on monteros and sports or any suv for that matter >> Montero-and-sport-expedition-box

Hi guys,

I'm not a member of the UK club, because I got banned! Yes banned from having an opinion, that someone else didn't like and reported me, so I thought I'd come across to a proper forum. Yes the white LC gave me the inspiration, and just adapted the similar shape to suit my own needs. Of course we all have different needs to cope with our own adventures.

When the weather turns better I promise to do sleeping area and possibly a video on here too. We have had torrential floods here and not been good where I am.

And please use as many ideas as you can from my build. We can all learn from each other!
