Expedition Vehicle on Movie Set

Not exactly an expedition vehicle, but it could be.

I spotted this rig during shooting of Transformers in downtown LA, a couple years ago. It was at 6'th and Spring in a parking lot along with several other interesting vehicles. The front looks like a H2, and I'm sure everything else is custom built by the studio. What ever happens to these vehicles...cause this one would be cool to have!

these cars are usually fabricated in conjunction with a picture car company thats sole purpose is to supply cars to movies, commercials etc. Most of the time they keep the cars in their inventory with the stipulation they can be used by the creating production at any time. Some vechicles cannot be used for any other projects than the ones they were created for. Every now and then things are sold but they rarely get Farther than the crew of the show they were on unless they just plain suck or are a bugatti :ylsmoke:

There is also a good chance that nothing is functional. What looks like steel could be wood or plastic, no interior, no real structure etc.

x2 on that. We built a trailer for a movie about a year ago. They just wanted it to look good on camera from 50' away. And the price they were willing to pay reflected that. If it can't be seen on camera, or you can fool the camera, then anything is possible.

They also said they were going to destroy it after they were done with it :Wow1:

Off-topic, but I have pictures somewhere of me next to that truck and "Ironhide", the Top-Kick pick-up, from when GM Performance brought them up to the St. Ignace carshow a few years back. Will throw the pics up if I can find them.

Post up if you find the pics.

It's funny to think that rescue truck may be nothing more than plywood and duct tape :sombrero:

One of the other movie cars in that lot was this-

Not too much maintenance done on it apparently. The front wheels are way out of whack. That's OK, it's probably made of cardboard and Popsicle sticks anyway!

Watching you from a ridge. In Alaska. I'm cold.

Well, if you'd like to know more about it, feel free to PM me.

My stepson did the fabrication on it.

Very cool.

Where was it built?
What is the back compartment made of? Fiberglass?
Did anything happen with it after the movie, or did it get disassembled?

Thanks for posting!

I got some pics somewhere of a bunch of Dodges they used when we stumbled upon them shooting "The Island" in Detroit a few years ago. There was also another crazy-looking custom built car sitting there.

Most of the time these vehicles get destroyed once they're no longer needed by the studio.

The studio or producers or whomever will not sell vehicles like that to the public, to avoid any liabilty for someone operating a modified vehicle that they built.
