Expo prepped Hummer H3T

Hey all, long time reader but rarely post. Actually, I think the only thing that I've ever posted was a classified for my stock tires off my H3T. So, time to give back a little...

I built this rig up last summer and have several trips in it now. Started out with a '09 H3T, 5 spd M/T, Adventure Package (33's, lockers front and rear, 4:1 transfer case, etc), cloth interior. Basic setup, probably the only fluff is the sunroof which I quite like. I drove directly from the lot and replaced the Bridestone Dueler A/T's with BFG M/T's. Next I drove straight home and removed all chrome. The grill and emblems were all sprayed with bedliner, wheels wet sanded and sprayed semi-gloss black. I opted for the hard aluminum toneau cover, locks, super sturdy, removes in about 10 min, coated in black bedliner. I also installed a tailgate lock so that I can keep my gear safe on the road. Up on top, went with a Columbus Variant RTT and Fiama F35 awning. Incredibly comfortable, simple, and effortless to open and close. Just in case the lockers aren't enough to get me out of trouble, there's a 9K lb winch up front in the Boulder Accessories bumper. This setup was offered as a dealer installed option but I picked mine up for a song on fleabay.

I've logged a bit over 21k miles so far and a bunch of road trips, mainly to southern UT and western CO. Problems so far have been minimal. Had rattle in my exhaust, fixed under warranty and a couple of the attachment points on my roof came loose. Not sure if I had some bad hardware in there or what. I was originally running just 2 crossbars but upped it to 4 for better load balancing. Haven't had any further issues with this setup. Fuel economy is about 17 mpg if I'm driving easy (65-70) and falls off to around 15 if I'm pushing 80. Not too bad for a loaded down 4wd.

Plans are for a fridge and second battery with solar on the tent at some point. Mainly just small mods. One of the main reasons I picked this rig is for it's bone stock capability. Factory lockers, 33's, suspension, even the winch bumper is supported by my dealer, means minimal headaches and more time traveling. I'm no stranger to the wrench, built several rigs over the years, but it sure is nice to just hop in and go play.

Thanks for posting up!
I like the idea of a de-blinged H3T
There were a few at SEMA two years ago that had no chrome and a cool flat matte finished paint.

Welcome!

Thanks Brian!

Yeah, I looked hard at various platforms more commonly built up on this site but decided on a slightly different route. And just so we don't get confused with the mall cruiser crowd, here we are running trails in Moab with the temp tag still on ->

Nice build! So did you go from the wagon to the pick up? Which do you prefer?
Thanks

Thanks all for the comments, it has been a fun project.

Yeah, went from the wagon to the truck. We slept inside the wagon and carried our gear on top/back but really wanted to go to a RTT. For a couple of reasons, I wasn't 100% sold on ladder access to the tent. The pickup allows us to step from the tailgate, to the bed top, to the tent with ease. This really makes mid-night pee breaks a non issue. We have a German Shepard that used to travel with us a lot and it's much easier to get a dog into the tent from the bed of a pickup.

There were a couple other reasons to update. One being that we had the first year H3 with the smaller motor (3.5l) that tended to have valve issues. It was also a base trim w/o lockers or the 4:1 transfer case. The 4:1 case is phenomenal, the crawl ratio is really great if you keep the 33's. And, of course, lockers make most things a cake walk. It's also worth noting that the '09 H3's picked up a cast iron diff housing along with the front locker availability. Prior years were breaking diffs even without lockers. Still can happen with the new ones but it's considerably more rare.

And finally, I much prefer the storage situation with the pickup. As you can see we're usually carrying bikes and often climbing or canyoneering gear. That stuff just stinks after a few days on the road. Being able to isolate dirty gear in the bed, separate from the cab is huge on a week long trip. You ever stand in stagnant water at the bottom of a slot canyon? That stuff stinks!

So, yeah, really happy with the 'T over the wagon, it suits our needs perfectly.

Now, THAT is a Hummer I'd drive... I like the H3s... and been curious about the H3Ts... but, not, on my cost list at this point.... but, that is a beaut.
