F150 - 2.7L vs 3.5L vs 5.0L

On Fuelly the 2.7 Eco averages 18.5, so you aren't terribly far off. I average over 16 with my Tundra, but I rarely drive freeways or stop and go city. Outside of a real controlled test, Fuelly data is as good as you'll get (many anecdotes). Speaking of controlled tests, Consumer Reports gets 15 mpg overall for the Tundra, 19 for the 2.7 Eco.

I live in a pretty mountainous terrain so usually MPG is below EPA estimated. But didn’t seem to affect the Ecoboost as much.

The 6.2L is a monster for sure, but the 3.5L puts out great numbers and good mpgs

Even the NA 5.0L has numbers to compete with the big block 6.2L

The 3.5L just achieves max numbers at much lower RPMs

I'd stick to something older with a pre-10 speed transmission. The transmission never knows what gear it needs to be in. It knows what gear it WANTS to be in - 10th! If you're cruising at low speed (say 35-45 mph) and you want to accelerate, you have to wait a second while the transmission does an awkward 7x downshift before the truck starts to accelerate. Annoying in a 5.0, probably worse in a turbo version. Who knows maybe that time lets the turbos spool so there's no lag? Just a big hit like the secondaries after the bog on a poorly tuned quadrajet? The 6 speed transmissions are annoying enough as it is. I guess I'm just a 4 speed auto kinda guy...
I do not care for the 6 speed, if mine drops from 6 to 4th or 3rd under hard acceleration it feels like it’s going to fall out from under the truck

I think the 6.2 was a little hotter than that for the F150, same specs as the Raptor I believe. It was derated a little for the f250/350 and derated even more for the f450/550 cab and chassis models. I don’t think the 5.0 was as powerful in that generation as you posted either. I owned a 2012 ecoboost f150 and have driven a couple different 5.0 and 6.2 f150’s. If I were to buy a used f150 from that generation, I’d definitely get the 6.2. They’re not nearly as common as the 5.0 or ecoboost but they’re out there. Mostly the more loaded trucks had them like the loaded FX4, lariat, king ranch and platinum. Unlike the 5.0/ecoboost trucks, the 6.2 f150 used a hydraulic steering rack like the raptor instead of the electric rack. In my opinion, the hydraulic rack has a better feel to it. Some of the heavy duty payload package trucks also had the 6.2. I looked at one in 2013 and considered trading my EB in for it.

I now know why I miss the power of my 2012 3.5L (365hp/420hp)

I really thought the 5.3L would have been a good choice...........my rental insurance coverage was running out and I had to find a truck fast

I bet the 2015+ aluminum body 3.5L trucks are very fast, over my 2012 3.5L

The aluminum bodied trucks are supposed to be 700 pounds lighter (frame alone is 60 pounds lighter)

I don't know about the 6.2 in the F150, but the owners manual for my 2019 lists a minimum of 87 octane, and states that premium (at least 91 octane) be used for best performance. It does not specify which engine this applies to, so it must apply to all gas engines in the F150.
 
Wow, only 4500 miles?! I kind of wish I could keep the miles off like that but we use our vehicles a lot and I simply enjoy driving them.

I purchased it from a collector in July with 1400 miles on it. With trips planned for 2022 it will have 18-20,000 miles on it before the years end. A gen1 Raptor has always been my dream truck since watching, "Born in Baja," when i was in high school. The stars sort of aligned and i happened to be without a truck with some jingle in my pocket so i scooped it up. I spent WAY more than i should have but heck, ya only live once.

I don’t know what the 6.2L requires, but I’d imagine it’s 87. My 2018 with 3.5TT asks for 87, but I alway run 91/93 due to the power increase.

I can also say that my truck is faster than a 1st gen Raptor from a ~20mph roll. We took off together, he punched it, then I punched it. I caught up and pulled a fender. ?
