F150 Build Plan

I am also debating on how important it would be to have a different(steel) bumper or bull bar. Also whether or not I need heavier duty side runners.

I'd do the heavy duty side runners before the front bumper. Money better spent IMO. Unless you live in an area where animal strikes are common I suppose. Otherwise you can still mount a winch inside your stock front bumper or at least I can on my 2013. I would think you could on yours as well.

This combo may not work for you. Check that that UCA won't need wheels with less backspacing than the stock wheels.

I read that the BDS UCAs will work with a max 5.5" of backspace, which I believe is what the factory wheel is. So i think it should work, but I will Definitely check before ordering. Thanks for the heads up!

I'm getting one of these for my 2018 SCAB 3.5EB 3.3 RR, E lock.

I don't see any reason to go with any more than 3.3 gears with the 10 speed tranny. The 3.5EB has power to spare and lots of torque at low RPM.
I'm very interested in your build as I'm heading in a similar direction. I also favor the SCAB over the SCREW.

I have read about those campers a bit they look pretty cool. Right now I am trying to keep everything below cab height(Lower center of gravity less drag), not sure if this will end up working out yet or not.
I saw they are also coming out with a RTT version but I think I read it is 96" long so there would be quite a bit of overhand if I mounted it behind the cab.
This whole tent thing is a conundrum so far.
Glad to see there is at least one other person that favors the SCAB haha!

Makes sense, I haven't hit any animals yet but I guess you never know. Thanks for the advice!

I just got an 18 SCREW, 3.5 EB, long bed FX4 and have not found an arrangement to allow for a winch inside of the bumper or any aftermarket bumper that accommodates a winch without impacting the intercooler air draw. Some are apparently working on it, but as of a couple of weeks ago I had not found an acceptable solution for a winch. Just an FYI. The truck is not my main off-road vehicle, so not a huge issue for me.

You know that may have to do with being Ecoboost trucks. You may be right.

I wasn't really think of adding a winch at least to start with. Was just going to use a Hi-lift as a come along if needed. Your post got me curious though so I did a little bit of digging.
It seems like some people are moving the inter-cooler(going aftermarket) but I think you run into warranty issues there.
It seems some people are using a front receiver mount and only attaching the winch when needed(this is probably the route I would go if I got a winch)
Lastly it seems like the warn ascent might be an option that is compatible with the ecoboost.

I have a highlift, 60' chain, 100' rope (rarely), Maxtrax, some 4x4 lumber, tire chains, and a shovel in the bed of my truck.

Winches are nice if you get stuck every weekend. I used mine less often than I had to take it completely apart for service. You have to keep in mind, they're just a starter motor, relay box, and a planetary gear. Salt spray isn't kind to any of that. It's not fun fixing winches more often than you use them. Especially when winches are $1200+ and bumpers are $1500+. The way Expo eats cash, that $3000 is best elsewhere.

Camping is different than wheeling. 99% of the time, I'm winching at the rear of the truck. Why would I want to go forward and get more stuck?

Yea, this makes total sense. Winch I why I am thinking I don't need a bumper or a winch.
With a high-lift, chain, straps, maxtrax and shovel should be able to get myself out of an emergency.
Don't really expect to have to use them much, but want to have just in case.

Truck is supposed to be here next week!

Couple of Questions for you guys.

1) Thoughts on going with a 295/70/r17 vs 285/70/r17 or something else around that size?
2) I've been doing a bunch of searching, but still struggling to decide between 2.0 and 2.5 coilovers. Is there a good rule of thumb for deciding if i need the larger coilovers?

Thanks!

Congrats, can't wait to see your build! I think the 285s could be a better option if you were concerned with any rubbing, I don't know where you are located but I got a great deal on new Falken LT 285s at a place in Escondido (socal) for my dads truck. $1200 cash for new tires and new eagle alloy rims. Concerning the shocks, I think the 2.5s would be great and theres always some deals on criagslist sometimes from people upgrading.

I recently got a 17 F150 XL supercab 4x4 and I am slowly going to build it out. Nice to see others building f150s on here too.

Hooray! Another person with the supercab haha! (I swear I only ever see crew cabs)
I guess I should have mentioned that I am planning on going somewhere between 1.5" -2" in the front with the coilovers to level the truck. That may have some effect on the rubbing issue. Planning on keeping the stock 17" alloy wheels.
Dunno if I would personally trust used shocks who knows what people have done to them!
Just not sure if 2.5s would be overkill and not sure how to figure that out either.
I will note that I am currently leaning toward fox coilovers and shocks, but no 100% set on that.

Unless you plan on towing a heavy trailer, look at the 2.7 EcoBoost. For what you have described it will do well and cost less to purchase and in fuel.
