F550 axles under a NPR

I have been doing research on building a Fuso or Npr. I have found several sets of F550 axles for sale. What are some opinions on this project? I own a metal fab shop, so I can build the suspension. I was thinking about using a divorced NP205 transfer case.

The F550 and NPR are about the same width. But the front diff
of the F550 is on the driver's side, and the Isuzu front diff (on
the 4x4 NPS) is on the passenger side (from the perspective of a
USA vehicle). So there's probably a bit of engineering to do to
make room under the Isuzu for the driveshaft.

Matt T, if you are looking at Dana 80 diffs you'll be better off with an ex Dodge as the drop to the front is on the same side as th NP,I'm not sure if Dodge used the Dana 110-135's,I have a NP205 transfer in my OKA and the thing is bullet proof, the only complaint is the low range not been low enough,if you are overhauling the NP make sure that good quality gaskets with the OE thickness are used,if it is overhauled right will last a looooong time.

I have tons of info on axle swaps (D60-D135), transfer case configurations, gear ratios, tire sizes, etc for building my Fuso... probably too much info....lol

but i have it all in notes, so why not share...:D

sent you a PM on pirate the other day. you can PM here or there or email at silversands@rjcgroup.net., all goes to the same place.

You could investigate whether a NP203 based "doubler" would fit in front of the 205. They make them for married versions and I think a divorced model has been made.
Additional 2.01:1 reduction.

check availability on the 3:1 kit, they stopped making them for a while due to lack of demand... They have a "new" 205 case and all kinds of upgraded parts for the 205. It would definitely be a VERY beefy case.. One thing to consider in a cabover is where to put shifters for a transfer case, where they would normally go between the seats.

I have explored using cases like an NV263 or NV273, which are actuated by small electric solenoids. I have seen air shift kits for a 205, but never electric or hydraulic.

someone please move foward on this, with pics. i have dreamed of this for a long time but never (re;probably wont ever) had the funds to make it happen. ive always thought of a short wheelbase npr with a 4dr cab with big solid axles under it. not much, if any, bigger than a 4dr f250....

I am gathering parts, funds and info on building a Fuso version. It will be a tow rig though and not an expo truck. Solid axles, 4WD, ARBs, 33-35" tires, about 165" wheelbase and 10-11' bed. Overall roughly the same size as a crew cab F250 with an 8' bed. IMO, more manoeverable and larger bed.

Just need to find a bit more $$$ before I start building. :D

Matt and I talked about the F550 axles. They are really massive and unless you are going to be really heavily loaded, they are way overkill for this application and will be boat anchors off road. The Dana S110 has only one locker choice, which is not great for off road, imo. A Dana 80 is a pretty damn big axle and survives fine under one ton Dodge and GM trucks pulling 20k car trailers, etc., so that is what I plan to use in the rear, with a Super70 being built for the front. ARBs are available for both of those.

I believe the one locker choice for the S110 is a Detroit Locker/NoSpin. Which IS great for offroad, IMHO; much better than an ARB for several reasons:
cheaper, unbreakable, always on (only a problem on slippery sidehills, but less important if you have an ARB in the front)
And one choice is infinitely better than none (the AAM 1 ton axles, till recently).
I do speak from experience with both ARB and Detroit.

thanks for the info on that Charlie. Did not mean to say that the locker was poor quality, etc., just that it was the only one available so if you wanted ARB, E-Locker, Spool, etc you dont have those options. If there is only one choice, is it still a "choice" :D

cheers,

I believe I am going to move forward on this project. The problem is I cannot decide what truck to start with. NPR, Fuso, UD? I am 6'6" and it seems the UD has more room with the extended cab. I believe I will use Dana axles. Any input on UDs would be great.

Extended Cab UDs are only available in 1800HD and above. Be careful with that bc lots of ppl will list an 1800SD as an HD, but you can tell bc it does not have the extended cab. Same cab (AFAIK) from 1800HD up to 2600 on the UD, though the chassis and running gear changes at 2600 to 10 lug axles and 22.5" wheels. IIRC, there is an 1800HD, then a 2000 and a 2300. Nothing in 24-2500 that i remember.

Like most other imports, slightly underpowered, but will run forever as Nissan builds a pretty good diesel motor. I have quite a few UD brochures and spec sheets in PDF if you want those.

Matt T,
My brother have a couple of UD's and he's very happy with them, this is in the far north of Aust and these trucks work for the $$$,this tells you something as he is a Toyota dealer and can get good discounts on Hino's

*bump*

Just picked up a '94 FSR-FD1 with a 6BGiT. Wondering if there has been progress in the NPR/FTR/Fuso 4x4 conversion arena, because I plan on making this my Heavy Duty welding rig and I will definitly be needing 4x4. Thanks
