Fall fishing

we had the water temp drop 9 degrees in one night from 60 to 51

but a few chilly sunny days and the fish have been hitting sculpins and streamers - hard

we had so much rain last 2 weeks the local rives are like all new rivers, really don't recognize them compared to our dry August/September

picked up a nice Deer Creek switch with a Lamson litespeed 3.0. I wanted a sealed drag system and large arbor for under 400$

ordered a custom Scandi kit line from Robert Meiser since he and Steve designed the rod

should get out with it this weekend, can't wait. Quite an art form and certainly going to be a learning experience

I think my single handed days are over :)

any other spey lovers?

Ohhh-Spey rod. You going to wear a kilt too ??:sombrero: Sounde like a nice kit-need some pictures of the rod and the fish so I can live vicariously.

Never tried a spey rod but then again with the cover over the trout streams here it would be a bad fit. The technique isn't too far off surf casting (which I've done a lot of) and I bet a spey would do very well in the surf when there is a flat/sand bar just behind the first set of breakers.

We've a definite change in weather in my area, 2 weeks ago I was still wet wading! Now there is a nip in the morning that has me thinking I should be wearing some light long johns. Before I know it I'll be wearing two layers of long johns and socks under my wading kit.

I'm now busy at the bench tying up variations of Sydney Glassos' Heron patterns (mostly orange and olive/brown) as well as a few leeches in sizes from 6 to 2/0, and am playing around with tertiary goose as a spey hackle. Birds season starts this weekend and I'm going to try my hand at harvesting and dying my own feathers this year.

I suppose you bought one of the Skandit lines from Meiser? I haven't bought a two hander yet, but can effectively cast one. Aaron Reimer from River Run Anglers taught me how to single spey with a single hander (10' 8wt; works great for swinging or high stick nymphing) which is ok up to a type 3 sinking tip. This winter I should be able to get my hands on a 13' 7wt to use as an all around winter/big fish stick though.

Best fishes-Terry

nice Terry!

hey I'm coming out to Seattle in June, could you point me in the right direction, I'm willing to travel a few hours outside the city if I have to

I went with a Scandi line from Bob ( great guy, super nice, inviting, and love the work he and Steve do ) they cut for this rod and sent it out today, 2 day mail BABY YEAH!

if you have a camera would love to see some of your flys

Wander,

we all know you've been waiting your whole life to say you can put two hands on your rod, now's your chance! ;)

David Miller did well today oh and Lance evidently was local for a twitter ride

:jump: My surf rod is a 10 footer:ylsmoke:

Did you make the ride?

naah I missed it but would have loved to have been there

evidently Lance twitters rides from all over the world and people show up. About 3-400 people showed up for this one but apparently a few riders had to race by him on a short hill for bragging rights etc. seriously, who does that?

I thought it was cool however, he was attending a dinner party memorial for cancer funding

pretty cool

....Freds. I can just hear them gathered around some overly elaborate coffee-"yeah, I gave him a go, I guess he's not what he used to be"

My macro photo skills are horrible, any my creations are meant to fish so they are not as sexy as this example of a Sydney Glasso style wing as tied by FGS III on speypages:

IMO there are only a couple of waters fishing for Steelhead in June and I will send you some data and people to get ahold of via PM.

I fished for a few hours on Friday, nothing better than being sack deep swinging a beautiful run in October! :ylsmoke:

Nice looking fly-you're right the flies that catch fish are not the pretty flies you see on display-the fish know what's up. That fly looks just the thing to make a steel head hungry.

Very nice! I always wanted to try trying for the River Spey. Nice looking fly. Do you mind posting a recipe? I haven't tied in a while but I mostly tie trout stuff although I prefer to stack deerhair and salt flatwings. I don't have many pictures of my ties but I do have this one taken a while back.

Lads- read my post again, that's not my fly!

7wt- that is some sick work stacking deer hair!

Glasso originally tied his heron patterns with heron hackle, something illegal now, so many substitue Blue eared pheasant, goose, or even pheasant rump...really any longish hackle that will flow in the water. The wing is set with 4 total dyed hackles, two on each side.

I can't set bronze mallard wings to save my life (yet) so this style suits me for now.

Some history on Glasso:

Edit: Here's Dec Hogan tying his Mahoney spey, which uses many of the same techniques and materials. This clip is from a video he did with Marty Howard: http://vodpod.com/watch/3185595-mahoney-spey-fly
