Family Trip Colorado July 2013

Awesome trip. It's always funny to see places I know in people's trip reports. My wife and I got engaged on the bridge above Helen Hunt Falls in 2005. The gold mine in Cripple Creek is actually the richest gold district in north America and has produced more gold then the Yukon and California gold rushes combined. The pit mine is the second largest gold pit mine operation in the world and is still VERY active. I used to work at the courthouse in Cripple Creek when I was with the Sheriff's Office and had a good knowledge of the local history. Sad to see how the casinos have overrun the place although the visitor center on the hill above town across from the Molly Kathleen mine is pretty awesome and free to boot. You have a beautiful family and it's great to see you out having adventures together. Enjoy the years as they go WAY too fast as you've probably already noticed.

Excellent write up, some great pics you've taken there.

Good to see people taking the bairns out into the wilderness.

Nice write-up!! I've done a similar trip with the family a few years back. If you ever get back, Medano Pass is worth revisiting, we love that trail and use it to get from the wet mountain valley to the dunes often and a shortcut to western colorado. BTW, I'm in wichita, ks.

Just checking in, surprised that it's garnered a few more responses. Thanks for the kind words, hopefully we'll be back soon. You guys that live in or around the mountains have a great advantage. Living in such rugged beauty. Those of us stuck in the plains have advantages too. I'll let you know when I figure some out!
