FG Dual Cab Air con Upgrade

Hi all, first time post to this site, lots of great info & knowledge in here!
I Have a 94 FG 4x4 turbo Dual cab canter, We use it for going on all sorts of trips bush, highway, desert up to 2000kms at a time etc. We mainly carry motorbikes & gear in the back & tow an offroad jayco expanda for sluming it lol.
Anyway, luv it but the std air con lets it down in summer a bit so i was wondering if anyone can offer advise on upgrading to either roof top (reddot type) or inside rear addition? Also approx cost.
Im also in the process of getting bigger tyres & inquiring about SRW mod as i want to get a bit better road speed out of it without screaming its head off!
I want to keep the full load capacity so from what i have learned so far the best way to go is the 19.5 rims?
36" tyres sound like the best to get the rpms down too?
Has anyone had any trouble getting a decent sized alternator for these things?
Any info much appreciated
Regards Gav

No good suggestions. But I can sympathize. Even in a standard cab I find the AC in my 99FG inadequate under some conditions, mainly driving West into the sun on a hot day. Having the windows tinted is on my list of things to do.

I added a dark tint stripe across the top of the windshield and it helps a bit. With the large amount of glass it is like driving a fish bowl -remember the AMC Pacer. I have also added a separate 12 V oscillating fan that helps move the air around the cab.

Sounds to me like you need the Evaporator cleaned out, and a new blower fan, if it hasn't been changed. they lose power after alot of hours trying to force air through the blocked Evap and filter.
Alt. is a custom beef up, unless someone has adapters for something else.

the evap & fan are all good m8, i think its just a bit small for the size of the cab. I am also going to fit some fabric curtins to the doors to try & cut the direct sun down a bit. I do have the windows tinted already however i think the curtins will cut the heat coming thru a bit more.

Did you do the side windows?

No, the side windows are just the original slightly green automotive glass. I do have some cloth sun screens but can't use them on the highways.
The solar panel mounted on the roof does act somewhat like a desert roof. Keeps the direct sun off the cab roof and the airflow removes the heat.

Hi we had the windows tinted that helped.
Then we cleaned on the air con filter ( thanks to Engineer for telling us where it is).
Then we used Dynamat Super lite and then covered that with Dynamat Dynaliner 12mm. Does make the truck quieter and cooler but i would not call the air con icy cold.

Hi Gav ,Check that the ducting is all secure, mine slipped off the fan housing and was sucking air from after cooling radiator therefore even though the fan was blowing out of the vents it was not going past anything cold.If you can get a laser thermometer and aim it at the fins on the radiator it should read a couple of degrees C .Mines at 2 on at 30 degree day.

Hi Gav,

We sell a 220Amp alternator upgrade (direct replacement kit) >> 220Amp @12V (still 125Amp @ idle) for the FG underground mine vehicles . It would probably fit up to a '94 but would have to check. Obviously we'd be talking about a 24v version so halve the amps @24v.

Otherwise way, way back.......like when your FG was a the sparkling pride of some country truck sales yard........we used to get the original alternators rewound to squeeze another 40 or 50 amps out of them to run the big aircon fans for the old 24volt tour buses. New aircons are so much more efficient in electrical power by comparison. PM me if you really need to do this.

Regards John.
