I believe the 5-speed transmission is the main selling point for 03+. Next step up is 06+ for bump in HP.

There is nothing wrong with the 4-speed transmission. Some see it as a handicap, but there are pros and cons with every MY. (ie, pro of 5-speed transmission is partially offset by Nav integrated HVAC system). Those "pros and cons" are really non-issue as far as actual performance and reliability of the rig, as LC's have proven to be very stout vehicles. Most of the "cons" are over-exaggerated internet rumors blown out of proportion anyway. So I'd say just get the one in the best condition for your budget and go from there.

I definitely agree that there is nothing wrong with the 4 speed transmission. I have 272,000 on my 98 LC and the transmission (like everything else) is bulletproof. Absolutely no problems ever from a durability standpoint and I can't say a 5 speed would drive any better. The 5 speed may get slightly better mileage but do we really drive these things with mileage in mind?

Man - I've looked at like 20 vehicles so far, with maybe 10% of them where the timing belt service has actually been done. What kills me are some of these are at Toyota dealerships that tell me, "Oh...uh...we don't know if it's been done, but we've done a maintenance inspection and everything's all good!" Yeah.....riiight. It's all good until it breaks and you are needing a new engine.

I'm immediately turned off when a dealership doesn't disclose something this important up front, especially when it's so easy to verify through Toyota or looking for the sticker.
