Finally!! Found the right Astro!

Finally, after many headaches, and wasted days looking at Astro/Safari vans that turned out to be nothing like they were advertised to be, I have finally found the ONE.

My criteria was obviously it had to be AWD, it had to have dutch rear doors, it had to have 2nd row captain seats (I have one kid, this lets me remove one more seat for extra space), and I wanted as much maintenance history as possible and it had to be clean.

My search finally ended when I had exhausted craigslist looking from my area of seattle/tacoma to the north border, to idaho and oregon. I finally thought well "Why not check eBay"? So I did, I found 2 within 250 miles, and only one I was interested in. He is an older gentleman who is the ORIGINAL owner (Score!), the van is in Vancouver, WA, so the distance wasn't bad. He sent me tons of pictures, was very upfront and willing to discuss the van in depth down to the little details.

For the first time since I started searching, I knew in my gut that this was the right one. I was more or less looking for a 96 or newer for the facelift/newer style interior. This one is a 95, with 143k on the clock, and super super clean.

That being said, I am excited! Nobody understands why I am so excited to get an Astro van or why I searched so long for the right one, but I knew you guys would get it.

Here's a few pictures (The ones that he sent me), but I will get some more this weekend when I have a chance to play with it a little bit. The first item to be addressed will be finding some new wheels and tires as these tires are near the end of their life. (Any tire suggestions?), What's the best size tire for a stock height van? I may do a 2" in the future, but it will be a ways down the road.

Nice.

The 1st Gen are a little lighter, get better mpg, have bigger footwells, and are better looking IMO. I'd go here for wheel/tire questions and other Astro specific questions as oppossed to overlading set up questions. http://astrosafarivans.org/bb2/index.php?sid=1ccfd1860dadad255b78b1c6d5ab17d1

When we go to the beach I like to back up close to the waters edge, and in those situations it's fun to have the bench seat facing backward, pushed all the way up to the front, to the backs of the front buckets. You could face you single rear bucket toward the back for certain situations.

That's a good idea for the beach! The first astro I had (just a 2wd that I used to haul stuff), I would face the second bench backwards, and some milk crates in between with pillows on top for my own version of a sleeper. Lol

Can't wait to start prepping this thing for some family adventures around the northwest!

Btw, I have always loved your van!

Thanks guys...Agreed finding the original owner of anything this age is not easy! Patience truly is a virtue.

If you are planning on doing a 2" lift, you might as well just do it and get the tires/wheels to go with it. The lift is seriously easy to do. For tires, upgrading to truck tires with Load D or E side walls has been known to improve the handling of these vans. I've upgraded to 16" rims on Grumpy with Load E tires. Normal people with a 2" lift usually run 235/75R15 or 235/70R16 tires (29"), Grumpy has 245/75R16 (31"), but I've done a little body modification.

I know the lift isn't all that expensive, at least the 2", I was looking at it on overlandvans, but I don't know if it's in the immediate budget, where as tires will be needed fairly soon. I would prefer to do both at the same time, just not sure if it's a possibility. Have to prioritize a bit more carefully when you have a 1 yr old kid. As for asv, I am still waiting for my membership to be approved...Thought that was a bit weird that it has to be approved by an admin.
