(finally) Pulling the trigger - Magirus 170D11

Hi everyone,

I've been lurking around these forums for a while now, asking questions, exploring many (many) options. I've managed to get the wife onboard with the idea of a large expedition camper. Actually, a long family road trip was her idea. Well... sort of. A bit of background context is required here I think:

Initially we were planning on purchasing a 45+ foot sailboat to cruise the world as a family. We bought a test-boat (a small 26 foot tanzer) 3 years ago and quickly discovered that sailing with 1 young child is difficult, and since we now have 2, my wife and I agreed that the project would have to wait. I somehow got talked into purchasing a 28 foot c-class motorhome as a test to see if we could live in a camper and travel, hence allowing us to have a world-exploring experience with the kids sooner rather than later. We did the whole motorhome thing for a year, going out on regular weekend trips and occasional 5-12 day road treks. We loved it! The kids loved it too! Of course, a couple with young children whom we are friends with purchasing a (gorgeous) westfalia at the same time might have helped make the summer more enjoyable. ;)

However, we quickly realized that the motorhome was going to disintegrate if we took it to the places we wanted to go. We live in Québec and the best places (outside of Montréal, of course) often are at the end of gravel or dirt roads, sometimes with some washboarding. The Motorhome did not like this. Nor did it like slightly humid grass, apparently. My wife also discovered that standing directly behind the wheels of an RV trying to get out of a muddy hole is not a good idea.

One of my colleagues at work introduced me to the concept of an overland camper at some time during the summer, which made me realize I had seen this type of camper a few times in my life, including during my honeymoon a few years prior. I managed to find the photos I had shot of this (to me at the time) curious truck. Thankfully they had a website : https://www.two-vagabonds.de/ As it turns out, they converted a Magirus Deutz 170D11. By this point I had already conducted quite a bit of research and had concluded that the best truck for our needs and wants was probably a European cabover ex-fire truck. A Magirus Deutz or a Mercedes.

So far, I've had a few close calls: trucks I wished to purchase but was unable to agree on a price or where I was "second in line" (due mainly to being a remote buyer).

Well... it's finally happening I think. I'm buying a 1981 Magirus 170D11 from Germany. Inspection is this week, but is probably a formality since I've already spoken with the mechanic that does the regular maintenance. Nevertheless, before flying out I'm getting a full report on all of the truck's systems.

-Seriously, it's hard to believe that I might finally get my big-ass truck. Because let's not kid ourselves. I could have found another suitable vehicle for my family. This isn't about NEEDING a 4x4 doka. It's about WANTING one.-

The truck is going to need some work to meet my family's needs. Cosmetic because I'm a designer so it has to be pretty, Mechanical because it's almost 40 years old and... camperical? Well, the camper needs some work for my family to live in it full time. Needs refinishing, and... other interesting items.

So here is where I'd like to enlist your help. I've done a lot of research but I thought I'd consult the crowd once more just to see if anyone has some more information I haven't found yet.

  1. The truck is in Germany. I'm going to get 5 day temporary plates to drive it myself to Hamburg. I have a Québec driver's license which says I can drive Motorhomes. The truck is registered in Germany as a motorhome. However, in Germany, since it is over 3500 kg, you need a truck license. I am in the process of getting said truck license, but won't have it at the soonest for 40 days. Is there somewhere I can confirm that I am allowed to drive it in German with my license? I have an international license too if that helps with A,B and E class stamped (and the wording/punctuation on B class is weird. It could be interpreted either way). My Québec license allows me to drive any motorhome, regardless of weight or airbrakes.
  2. I want to import directly to Montréal if possible. It looks like only Flatrack is possible. I'm getting multiple quotes. It looks like a freight forwarder on the European side can handle all of the paperwork for the export. It's the import that has proven less clear. Some forwarders are saying I should use a local agent and to expect to pay 1500$ for the Montréal agent. Can someone elucidate this point/indicate a good source of information on how/what exactly I need to do here?
  3. On the subject of shipping, anyone recommend any shipping companies?
  4. Insurance. Well, my insurance doesn't seem to want to insure the vehicle on European soil. Any companies out there willing to do short-term insurance that you recommend?
  5. Spare parts. Anyone have a north American source for spare parts? I'm planning on buying some in Germany, but you never know what you'll need once you start work on a vehicle.
  6. The camper right now is a modified s-280. an aluminium army shelter. I'd like to add some storage hanging off of the back and a rigid pop-top mezzanine level. I've found 1 or 2 threads on the forum but not as much construction information regarding the framing options. I'd like to build with aluminium. Anyone out there have good projects and DIY sites to point to? I've been looking into 80/20, amongst other things.
That's uh... pretty much it for now. I'll try to document everything properly too to share my experience/knowledge gained.

And yes I'll post pictures as soon as I can.

Hiya
Good luck :)
German Export plates (if that's what you're getting) include third party insurance so you don't have to get more cover than that. Maybe you have to pay road tax too IIRC?
Over 3500kg in the EU needs a Class C for a camper or truck without getting into trailers.
As a suggestion, I would find out what it weighs now, guess what weight you want to add, see what it's like to drive up a long hill now then reassess what you want to bolt on :)
As recommended by Charlie Aarons here somewhere https://www.seabridge-tours.de/html/verschiffung.php?language=english

Thanks! I've contacted Seabridge and I'm waiting on a shipping quote. Looks like they only do RORO so not to Montréal but I'll wait on a price. Might be worth it.

Quick update:

Inspection report will be coming in next week. Should be a formality but I needed it for my Québec insurance company before they are willing to insure me on canadian Soil.

Will 95% likely be opting for 30 day german export plates (might opt for longer, discussing with the wife) because they come with insurance in Europe AND it means as long as I get insurance in North America, I can just drive off with the truck. It's going to come in to Halifax. Shippers are saying it's not a good idea to flatrack the truck because it'll get completely encrusted in Salt and then... corrosion!

Will be doing a permanent import of the vehicle and will TRY to claim it as business. We are in the process of purchasing some rental properties in the USA and I would likely be managing them remotely while also doing contract work on the road, so we're looking to see if we can legally claim it as a business import since it will essentially be our home AND office for a long time. It would save up to 4000$ in duties but I'm still figuring this bit out because I'm only going to do it if there is no doubt about it being above-board. I'll keep you posted as this might be useful information to my fellow canadians considering importing a vehicle.

On a side-note which will only interest Québécois, you normally lose health-care coverage after a year outside the province BUT my wonderful wife has been in contact with our health ministry and you can claim an exemption to this every 7 years. the 1 year abroad is based on calendar years so... we can leave in early summer and spend 6-8 months abroad within the calendar year and then claim the exemption january 1st which will allow us to spend a total of 18-20 months abroad without losing full health coverage (supplemented by some standard blue-cross policies that cover evac costs to Canada and supplements the governments coverage of fees while we are abroad. If any fellow Québécois are interested in this, I can post full details.

Next issue is my insurance company will cover me in North America but NOT beyond. I'm searching through this forum for solutions but the Marigus-Deutz makes it scary for most of the companies I've contacted.

I'm working of some sketches and mockups of what I want to do with the truck and I'll post them as soon as they are done.

I was looking into German plates to drive my truck over there before I shipped it over. It's actually not easy to optain those if you do not have an address in that country. I could have gotten plates im my parents name but that would have ment "selling" it officially to them. That in return would have caused trouble with the shipping and customs. We ended up getting it transported by trailer. Another option would be to ask your dealer for "Rote Kennzeichen".
As far as your license goes: I'm 99% sure that you need a proper semi license as you are on air brakes. The cops in Germany are WAY more on the ball than here in Canada. Meaning the risk of getting pulled over is higher. If they check your papers and find anything wrong with them, or your truck, you would be fined very heavily and forced to organize a different driver or transport.

Indeed. This is why I'm getting my Québec class 3 license (C class international). Should have it in about 30-ish days. Got my physical, next is theoretical exam. Since I've over 25 with multiple years of experience I only have to wait 30 days to pass my practical exam. Been driving a 28 foot camper all year and have driven air brake a class motorhomes before. My uncle is a heavy trcuk driver and will be tutoring me. So all should be good on that end. Might still offer to pay the seller to drop off the truck in Hamburg but I'd like to see it before shipping it... But I would have liked to fly over sooner to get the truck in before the new year.
The seller is offering to take care of paperwork for export plates so I'll go with that!

In Germany (EU) all vehicles above 3,5 tons needs a truck license, and this limit is not the net weight but the trucks full allowed maximum GV, no matter truck or RV - sorry.
I think Great Britain has some sort of 7,5 ton license (few trucks is under 7,5 tom GV besides Unimogs and VW MAN FAEs) - but thet are leaving EU as you know ;). I own a 6,5 ton GV Mercedes Benz L608D, and it requires a truck license. Temporary plates in Germany includes insurance, I think this should apply to non EU residensers also.

Good luck...

Quick Update, which may prove useful for my fellow Québécois/Canadian Overlanders:

I can drive the vehicle without a special permit using only my Canadian license. I found this German Government Website:
https://www.bmvi.de/SharedDocs/EN/A...gn-driving-licences-in-germany.html?nn=188334

Of note:
If you hold a valid domestic driving licence or International Driving Permit, you may drive all categories of vehicle indicated on your licence in the Federal Republic of Germany.

It looks like I only need to have my license translated. My Québec license allows me to drive vehicles under 4500kg. It also allows me to drive Motorhomes, with no weight restrictions even with air brakes.

This SAAQ website :
https://saaq.gouv.qc.ca/en/transpor...cles-converted-into-motor-homes/personal-use/

At the bottom it clearly states that a class 5 permit (what I currently hold) is required to drive a motorhome, even if it is a converted heavy vehicle.

A Class 5 driver's licence is required to drive a motor home.

Hope this helps someone else.

Regarding the truck, I'm still finalizing some administrative details!

Saw my truck for the first time. Bought it, got the keys, drove 650km to Hamburg, dropped it off at the port, high speed train back to Frankfurt and flying back home now. Easy, just tiring.

She’s going to need a paint job, don’t think I can bring the current paint back. Add it to the list!

Ok. Just a quick update. I'm back home. I've had time to sketch out a preliminary version of what I want to do with the camper now that I've seen it. Slight change in direction. I'll post just the raw sketch for now but will take the time to annotate, add dimensions and find some reference images then package it all up in a nice long post. For now, here's a bit of eye candy. 170D11 Camper Concept V1.0
