So I finally got 98 Montero with winter package and drove her 80 miles to get home, previous owner change water pump /brakes/valve cover and ball joint in last 20K miles , however no time belt were done when he owned in past 20K, so I am assuming I have to do timing belt since it is unknown. Not sure where to start.

I have not done this kind of work ever, what else needs to be while mechanic doing timing belt since he is there already. any one in North VA area can recommend good /reasonable shop who is done Montero work?

thx

You finally got one! Congrats! Very surprised that the water pump was replaced without doing the timing belt being the timing belt needs to come off to do that service.

Thank you, I asked same question, and I was told by PO that per his mechanic didn't need it. I guess I would have to do it .

A quick search will pull up everything related to the timing belt service.

so I found below from :
TO COMPLETE TIMING BELT/WATER PUMP JOB YOU WILL ALSO NEED:
Gates TCKWP287B Timing Belt Kit, No Water Pump Housing
Kit contains: Timing Belt, Timing Belt Hydraulic Tensioner, Tensioner Pulley, Idler, Water Pump, Water Pump to Water Pump Housing Gasket, Water Pump Housing to Engine Gasket, Upper Coolant Passage O-ring
MITSUBISHI MD 030763 O-ring, Under Plenum Coolant Passage Tube to Rear Water Pump Housing
MITSUBISHI MD 308723 Gasket, Water Pump Housing to Thermostat Housing
MITSUBISHI MD 372536 Camshaft Seal, Front (2 needed)
MITSUBISHI MN 176208 Camshaft O-ring, Rear (2 needed)
MITSUBISHI MD 149764 EGR Tube Gasket
MITSUBISHI MD 303148 Valve Cover Gasket (2 needed)
MITSUBISHI MD 198128 Valve Cover Spark Plug Tube Grommets (6 needed)
MITSUBISHI MR 994412 Crankshaft Washer
MITSUBISHI 1100A141 Crankshaft Bolt, 3rd Version
MITSUBISHI MD 3772249 Crankshaft Seal, Front
MITSUBISHI MD 199282 Intake Plenum Gasket

1. Can Gates parts to be used? I heard it has to be original OME parts?
2.also what would be good web site to order all of these?
3. and lastly is ( MITSUBISHI 1100A141 Crankshaft Bolt, 3rd Version) will fix famous Montero crankshaft bolt failure ?

thank you all

Thx

Bought everything for my kia (same 3.
5 as mitsubishi) from Rockauto except the crank bolt. Got that from dealer.

I put locktight in the bolt too just for extra measure

Congratulations newworld2004! Great buy! If you plan to keep her awhile, I would strongly consider spending the extra $ and use Mitsubishi OEM parts, gaskets, etc. for the engine. You can get a slight discount on Mitsubishi parts on-line.

Thank you, and yes I am planning to keep it as long as I can, I also need to find reputable shop in my area who has experienced on Mitsubishi engines.

for OEM parts I will use http://www.mitsubishipartssource.com/Mitsubishi_1998_Montero35L-V6-AutomaticBase/Maintenance.html or it is available other sites?

When buying a Montero of unknown provenance, you're best to consider either or both of the following two services:

1--Front of the engine: includes timing belt, water pump, front cam seals, crank seal/bolt/washer
*If the front of the engine is apart, I'd strongly recommend you replace your upper/lower radiator hoses, accessory drive belts, thermostat and cam and crank position sensors.

2--Top of the engine: includes valve cover gaskets, spark plugs/wires, spark plug tube grommets, rear cam seals
*If the top of the engine is apart, I'd strongly recommend you replace both rubber heater hoses and the rubber coolant crossover hose at the rear of the engine.

To answer your questions:

1. For the water pump/timing belt job, I used OEM parts except for the Gates timing belt kit and things have been OK. My first water pump from the kit did develop a leak at 2 years/40k miles, but this was because the water pump attachment bolts worked loose and not due to parts failure per se. Many would argue that if you go with the Gates kit, you should at minimum buy an OEM tensioner. I didn't personally but it's probably good insurance. Aftermarket tensioner failure has been reported by others.

2. oemmitsubishiparts.com is supposed to be good. Shipping is said to be slow. I often buy aftermarket parts from Amazon or Rock Auto.

3. That's the bolt you want, don't forget to replace the crank bolt washer too.

Good luck!
