Finished up my Tablet Mount

I have been trying to get this project finished for a while now. With my upcoming trip to the San Juan Mts in 3 weeks I have the proverbial fire now under my ******** to get things done. Last weekend I finished fabbing the mount. Last night I finished powering up.

Originally the mount started out as the Ram Tough Tray system for an Excursion. Didn't like it. The seat base was grotesquely enormous

and the laptop tray was excessive.

I wanted something with a small footprint. And something the wife wasn't going to ********** about when riding shotgun. So I fabbed a mount from some cardboard and then cut out the real thing.

That is the almost finished product, need to heatshrink the terminals and trim the threads, I was in a hurry last night. It bolts right to the seat and the plate sits on the tranny tunnel. There is very minimal deflection. Zero compared to the amount the Ram pole base has. I am not happy with it and may have to tap two more holes to make a set screw setup. I have about 1/2-3/4" of movement at the laptop.

The tray I used came with my Tablet. It's very low profile and is made for that specific tablet.

I took some delrin and glued it to the back of the mount. Then I laid out what I needed, DVD burner, 100watt inverter for the USB hub and the 12V supply for the tablet.

The wiring is not pretty and I plan to tighten it up with some snakeskin wire sleeve.

Yesterday was the day for cutting the 12V receptacles, a little plasma cutter time and some filing and they went in. However, the 12V plug for the Tablet likes to back out of the socket. Irritating. Gonna have to figure out why. These were West Marine receptacles, not sure if I should have went with another brand. The power is tied into a 3rd battery in the back controlled by a Luna solenoid. The inverter also has a USB port so I can charge the ipod or whatever may come.

Overall I am 90% pleased with it.

I need to box in the receptacles so it doesn't look so tacky. I also need to secure the removable base. Then tidy up the wire. Oh, and paint.Once that is accomplished I'll be happy.

For navigation I will be using an amalgam of Streets and Trips, Google Earth, and Ozi Explorer. Figure btwn USGS Topos and Google Satellite imagery I should be able to figure out where the hell I am. The Tablet also has Scantool for vehicle diagnostics, wifi, an all the other usual stuff everyone else has.

It's an Xplore i104. I worked on the design of their new touch screen model back in 04. Couldn't afford the 2-3K price tag back then but always wanted one. Picked one up used a few months back. It's all mil-spec, can beat the hell out of it. The newer models were dual mode, touch screen and digitizer pen. Mine is only digitizer. Sucks, but oh well. It's built like a brick, magnesium case. Pretty much the toughest tablet on the market.
