Firestone Coil-Rite

I'm looking for a recommendation for a great domestic or international dealer for the Firestone Coil-Rite product.

I would like to purchase a set for my rear springs on my 2001 Montero/Pajero/Shogun; however, the domestic manufacturer's website doesn't list it as available. The European manufacturer's website does list it as compatible.

So, I've written already to both websites about a 6 weeks ago and I still haven't heard a single reply. So, now I'm looking to find a good dealer that could help me sort this out. First off, I'm going to have to determine why it's not listed domestically. I.e., I need to determine if there is any difference in the suspension setup between the one offered in Europe and Australia vs. here in the US. If there is no difference, then I should be good to go assuming that I can either A) find a domestic dealer willing to locate the parts for me or B) find an international dealer willing to ship to the US.

Any help here would be very much appreciated.

Any Australian guys reading this at work right now willing to chime in?

Many thanks folks.

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Seriously, at this point I'd be glad for anyone to point me in the right direction for a good domestic dealer for these products. Someone who might be willing to help me sort out the right parts.

Thanks,

TD

I don't have any specific info for you regarding your application. I needed a taller Coil-Rite bag for the rear of my 4Runner. I located the standard, recommended bag for a stock 4Runner which included the bag specs (diameter/length). With that info I called Firestone telling them I needed a taller bag of the same diameter. They told me the part/kit number, I ordered it through a local tire dealer, then installed it myself.

I like the ability to adjust the ride height/spring rate for the load. I've only had the bags since a little before the ExPo Trophy.

Good luck ☺

Thanks, James. Good to hear from you. Long time to hear, eh. Great to meet you at the Trophy.

I am curious; did part of your kit include one of their 2" or 3" spacers? The spacer sits on top of or underneath the air bag. I'm thinking that I'll need a 2" spacer, but I need to check into it.

Thanks for the info. If I'd known you had these, I would have looked at your truck's suspension.

Since you have both, are the bags on your AT the same or similar as these Coil-Rites?

Firstly, the kit I purchased was for a G.M. 1/2-ton because that was the kit that offered the spring in the correct diameter yet with a taller height. The bags are 2.5-inches taller than the recommended/stock Toyota 4Runner Coil-Rites, and are the tallest bags they offer in that diameter (4.75”). My G.M. kit did include some type of 'spacers', but they are only about 1/2-in tall blue pucks and I didn't use them. I think the instructions referred to them as optional based on which model model of G.M. 1/2-ton truck you were putting the kit on. They were not needed nor would they have been helpful in my application. Really all I needed and used from the kit was the springs, air line, and fittings.

The only thing the springs on the Chaser and the 4Runner have in common is that they are both Firestone air springs. The 'Ride-Rite' (think that is the correct name) springs on the Chaser are stand alone springs as used on the Chaser, though I think similar springs are used as overload/supplemental springs on leaf sprung trucks. The Coil-Rite springs on the 4Runner live inside the rear coils and are not designed to work without being contained by a coil spring.

Thanks, yet again, James. Great info.

I never even thought of just doing the measurements and finding the right fit. I thought there would be specifics about where it mounted that were specific to each vehicle. That's why I didn't even bother.

How did you determine the measurements? With the loaded spring (already mounted on your vehicle) and adding the additional length you wanted? Or, did you start with the length of the Coil-Rite designed for a stock 4-Runner and then simply add the length you wanted?

Great stuff. Thanks again.

Started with the stock Coil-Rite, then called them for a taller spring with same diameter. My car has about 2.5-inches of lift in the rear so that is what I was looking for. They don't offer springs specifically for 'lifted applications' so you have to ‘figure’ and find what fits. If memory serves me, the stock height Coil-Rite was 7.5-inches and the tallest spring Firestone offers in the 4.75" diameter is a 10-incher, the ones I purchased. Not many miles or months on the springs yet but so far I think they are working perfectly.

Brad (Tuson4Runner) is running Air-Lift springs that I believe are larger diameter and a little shorter. He has his linked to one fill valve. Mine are independent, connected to separate valves.
