First bike

I want to get my motorcycle license this summer and wondering what would be a good bike to get? Looking to explore logging roads in Maine, Vermont and eventually go further.

First bike? KLR 650 (new +/- $5k; used $1500 on up). Reliable, easy to work on, easy to find parts. A legendary RTW, go anywhere, few frills, bike.

I started with a KLR and thought it was a bit big for trails and learning. I have no problem with them now but would suggest something smaller for a start. There are great bikes with good range that are smaller like the DR350(my favorite), DRZ400, WR250, xr's converted, etc... I would not recommend a 650 for a first bike unless you are a big guy and can muscle it around. The KLR is a proven bike and fantastic but I just think its a little big to start with, especially with trails.

since the OP didnt express interest in trails i'd agree that a KLR is a great bike for the intended purpose.

I learned on a Suzuki DR200 which is great for that purpose and fun to ride everywhere other than a freeway. Its a bit uncomfortable above 55MPH but I ride it on I495 and it will happily cruise at 65MPH.

It would definitely be possible to learn on a bigger bike and you certainly may want to consider that if you're planning on riding on the freeway for any length of time. On the other hand, cheap used bikes don't depreciate much so its not a big deal to switch bikes after getting some experience.

Which leads me shamelessly on to this: After 2 years and 8K miles I'm ready for something different so my motorcycle may be for sale soon if you're interested. Its a 2004 model Suzuki DR200SE, 10K miles, new IRC GP-1 tires, stock except for taller Renthal handlebars, Acerbis handguards and a few designer scratches from being dropped in the mud once or twice. :bike_rider:

My first was a Honda XL250 new in '78. Stone reliable, cheap, easy to work on, light weight. Would go anywhere. In hindsight it was an ideal choice.

Aside from a CR250R MX bike in the mix it's been only street bikes since.

I ride theYamaha WR250R. Great bike that will work for you for many years. Or, I also like the DRZ 350...a good value. The WR will give you about the same performance as the DRZ, but is a bit tall. I think the Suzuki is friendlier for those of us who are inseam challenged. :sombrero:
