First issue real issue with the 55 and some ?'s

The Monday before Turkey day I was happily driving my 55 to work. Minding my own business I approach a red light about 2 miles from my work and begin to hear metal scraping metal sounds. I pass it off initially as one of the cars next to me but hear it again at the next light. Now, I'm worried. As I stick my head out the window I attempt to re-create the sound by randomly braking and releasing the brake, it works... So, my first thought is that I need new brake pads. I sit in my office wondering if I'm going to be able to safely make it the 20 miles home without rear-ending someone in the rain. After a white-knuckle ride home, keeping about 1000 ft between me and the car in front of me, I safely park the 55 in the garage.
I begin to see this as a sign that I need to begin becoming intimately familiar with my relatively new to me 55, while increasing my wrenching skills at the same time.
With all the festivities going on I wasn't able to look into the problem until today. I made a quick stop at Sears to pick up a floor jack and some jack stands (bare essentials) and exhaust my $100 gift card :) .

Here's what I found.

PIC #1 - The good (passenger side)
PIC #2 - The bad (driver's side)
PIC #3 - The ugly (driver's side)

I don't know the technical term because I don't have my FSM yet. I'm guessing its a "brake pad retaining clip"? I'm willing to bet my life that I can't just walk in to NAPA/Checkers/Kragen/Goodyear and expect them to have it behind the counter!! Is that a safe assumption?

Also, this is a front disc brake conversion. Going through my receipts it appears these are parts from an Aussie FJ40 according to the PO's receipts from Man-a-fre. Can some one confirm this please? I'd like to know the origin of the parts if at all possible. It also looks like there is a wheel spacer on there as wheel. I also noticed a loose bolt and a missing bolt on the drivers side, backside of the caliper attaching the dust shield I believe.

I'll post some picts below.

I apologize for some of the quality, the lighting was less than ideal.

Please ignore the Superwinch hubs... I didn't do it  Going to go back to Aisin ASAP!!!!!

That doesn't look like Man-A-Fre's kit, which didn't use Toyota calipers. So either they're brakes from a later Cruiser or maybe a mini truck conversion. Honestly, your calipers look very similar to ones from a solid axle pickup (it's been a while since I owned that FJ40 so my memory is not good of them). That spring is available from Toyota and is not expensive. It would not surprise me if that spring is exactly the same on the 40/55/60/62 and mini trucks anyway.

Wanna bet?

I pulled 78 Landcruiser on a guess and that would be pretty safe for you to use on Auto Zone.com (should be able to get the same at Kragen or Checkers).

The pins are part number H5039 $2.99

The hardware kit that has the spring clips is H5547 $4.99

My local autozone hands me a lot of parts in Toyota bags. Most of the parts I have bought like Throttle position sensors and other sensors are real Deal ND and often has the Toyota logo on them.

Yeah you hear stories but most of the time that is the counter person or an error in the date base. Example is my 86 4Runner If I try to get rear wheel bearings and seals it lists the wrong bearings and seals. But the 85 and 87 bearings are the same and I know to check on of them.

That caliper may also have a part number cast into it and most parts stores can crossreference it and get you a year range that caliper is used on.

Agree those clips can be had anywhere, cheap too.

99% sure that is a Mini-truck brake conversion. The giveaway is the solid disc, as the Cruiser discs are vented. I's a perfectly good conversion, and used the later and "good" birfs. I don't know why they used the cheap hubs, but if you can find a pair of Aisin's and all the cone washers, it should be a direct swap.

The calipers could be from a solid axle mini (the IFS truck calipers have fins on the wheel side), but the rotors look vented in the pictures in his first post. I would guess it's most likely brakes from a 1975+ Cruiser, but it's possible that it has mini truck calipers and vented rotors from a later truck or Cruiser.

BTW, the Toyota number for that anti-rattle clip is 47748-60010 and should be about $3.50 from the dealer with your TLCA discount (list is $5).

If the PO got parts from Man-A-Fre, they sell Superwinch hubs and so that would be consistent. Aisin are the certainly the best option, but I wouldn't get too worked up about using Superwinch, Warn or Selectro hubs for what he's doing with the Pig at this point.

What? Like only driving it on the street :jump:

Thanks for the replies. I'm happy to hear that is looks like I have some sort of Toyota caliper.

I'm going to write down all the part numbers and make a run to the parts store/dealer this afternoon.

I'll report back with what I am able to find.

Those springs don't serve any real purpose besides letting you know that your wheel bearings are loose. When the bearings get sloppy the rotor moves independantly of the caliper and allows those springs to wear against the edge of the rotor. Grab your hub and give it a shake and see if you can feel any slop.

The Brakes

It doesn't look like a mini truck converstion to me. Those rotors look vented.

I looked at $OR's website, and it looks like Wagon parts to me, see here: http://www.sor.com/sor/cat084.tam?xax=1074&page.ctx=cat084.tam

I've always liked SOR's online catalog for the big blow out pictures. It kind of looks like it should be standard Wagon parts, but maybe someone who has looked at the front of a wagon recently should chime in, I sold mine 4 years ago.

I'll definitely check that out when I get home. Thanks!

'75-'90 disc brake Cruisers all look like that.

Um, they do serve a function beyond your description. They are supposed to keep the pads from rattling.
I can't hear them either, but that is their function. :)

In SA mini's there's some combo of stock calipers and rotors that gets you vented rotors. It could be that if it has SA Mini parts on it.
