This new Honda Base Station prototype lightweight camp trailer offers some pretty promising features.

According to a company spokesperson, part of Honda's raison d'etre in creating this Base Station camper is to "democratize camping." (whatever the heck that means?"

Honda claims that objective though is shown by the Base Station's lightweight design (the trailer weighs in at under 1500 pounds), which should allow a variety of smaller SUVs to tow this compact "toaster on wheels" looking camper.

It's no secret that Honda has been pushing to position itself as more of an off-road brand in recent years. After launching the TrailSport trim basically as a tire package on previous-generation models, Honda upped the ante with more serious versions for the redesigned Passport and Pilot SUVs. Now the brand is treading further off the beaten path with the Base Station prototype, a towable camping trailer designed by the team behind the Motocompacto folding scooter.

With the top raised, the Base Station has seven feet of headroom at its highest point. It sleeps up to four, with a fold-out futon-style couch that creates a queen-size bed and an optional bunk bed. There's a screen inside the camper to operate functions such as the ambient lighting, outlets and heat.

The Base Station has a modular design and can be outfitted with various accessories. In standard form, the camper is equipped with a heater and five windows, with the option to remove each window and replace it with Honda's add-ons. At launch, Honda will offer a shower, kitchen, and A/C unit, with an awning and an extra power bank to follow. Power for the various accessories is handled by a lithium battery and an inverter located under the futon. The battery system can be hooked up to outside sources like campsite hookups or generators but otherwise recharges using solar panels integrated into the roof.

Looks nice but tired of concept that never see the light or not as announced. Give us a real product and a price Honda!

This looks sad! Like many prototypes people have built that really do not know about camping. This looks like a artist persons dream of what they want camping to look like and not what it is.

I was watching the TV program this last week where the people guess the price of products. They had 2 yes two suitcases manufactures prices were $1,800.oo for a large and a under the seat size. They looked like the biggest waste of money. They looked like a pair that you could get at a garage sale for under $10.oo for both.

If you want people to notice you. Then you had better put a sign on them with what you paid for it. This looks like fashion over function!

I guess that this would look like a fashion statement of the Hilton Hotel parking lot with the $1,800.oo suitcases inside.

To say something nice about it I would say; the gray/silver is nice color.

I think that this is a advertising billboard to get people to say the name "Honda". See it worked, I said it!

$20-40k for an empty shell with an uncomfortable mattress and a primitive outdoor kitchen... which will likely never be actually produced? Yeah, that's democratized camping alright.

Is it just me, or is dumping crazy amounts of money into these projects that never materialize starting to look a lot like Learing Center Daycares in Minnesota?
