I have a FWC Fleet on a Tacoma v6, 4wd, based in Idaho. Very basic shell came with no propane or plumbing, just a small 75 aH battery. I added 100 watt solar, 18 liter Truckfridge compressor type fridge/freezer, which is the best addition by far. I built in a counter with a sink that drains into an igloo water container. Toilet is a luggable loo and chemical treatment(Poo Powder). I built a storage platform that I can sleep on with top down. I camp 3-4 months in winter in AZ or SoCAL. I drive it to trailheads or river daily and having to pop roof daily doesn't bother me, but might be an issue for some.
PROS:
I can drive up old mining roads that a hardsided would roll over on or not fit in tight spots.
Good stability at speed on highways in wind and on winding roads even driving at speed limit.
Decent mpg -14 at worst on rough back roads, and 18 highway at 60mph.
Aluminum frame so no inerior rot from leaks or condensation.
CONS:
Noisy in winds 25 mph+ with top up, mostly from shaking the whole rig which is more flexible than a hardside. OK except at night have to drop it to sleep.
No way I would have another person or even a dog in that small space for more than a couple days.
Should have gotten propane system with furnace for same conditions you describe.
No way would I camp in winter in Idaho even with a furnace.
If you get a camper with a wood frame, buy a new or very recent one and dont keep it forever. It will get wood rot eventually because it can't breathe like a house does.
