Fisherman outfitting

The wife has given the OK for a trip a month Musky fishing, for the weekend.:sombrero:

So I need a light SUPER easy to setup sleeping shelter, a small stove, cooler, and that is about it.

Ideal would be a Maggiolina RTT. But that is way out of my budget.
It only needs to fit one person, and has to be easy to setup by one person.
In the event of leaving on Fri night, it needs to be able to be setup easy in the dark.

I'm OK with a cheap A tent, but if there is something easier/better I'd like to hear it. I thought maybe a tent/cot would be an option but never slept in one.
If there is something bigger than a small bivy style tent that is still super easy to setup that would be ideal. This way extra clothes, rain suit, shoes, stuff like that can be kept in the tent instead of in the truck.

I can't buy a cheap used truck camper either because I have a fullsize Bronco, and not a truck.

If you have the room the tent cot is a sweet option. I don't have one but I've camped with guys that do. They swear by them, and they are always the first guys to have their camp set up drinking a beer. The same for break down.

Stove selection is complicated and very dependent of your style of camping. If you are okay with freeze dried, just add hot water, food almost any cheap single burner propane stove should be fine. If you want to cook more gourmet stuff look at a dual burner tri fuel stove from Coleman, easy to find a garage sales and thrift stores for a fraction of the new cost.

I like to use two small coolers rather than one large one. One is for beer, err I mean beverages the other is for food. The food cooler ice will last a lot longer since that cooler gets opened less frequently. It's also makes for more options when packing, and smaller coolers are easier to handle when full.

bronco is fine. use a truck tent that wraps around the back of the rig, keep the tail gate open, and use a foldable foam mattress.

or go the ground tent way and get an REI half dome 2. i can set mine up in 10-15 mins if in a hurry. great tent.

good luck

For this purpose I think I can get by with deli sandwiches for lunch/dinner, and frosted flakes for breakfast.
I do want to pack "real food" occasionally, because the two main places I went to spend time at both have parks on the lake with those permanent charcoal grills....A real dinner once in awhile would be nice. And I wouldn't have to leave the lake for dinner. (not that I would with sandwiches either though)

That is a good idea on the coolers. And since it's just me I can get away with two smaller coolers....With the entire family it seems like those small ones aren't big enough for anything.

For a sense of adventure I kinda think it would be cool to sleep on the boat even:) But the lakes aren't that big, and the boat isn't that big either.

I'm going to build a sleeping platform in the back of the Bronco....Hopefully by the middle of summer. I'm going to be busy between now and then on a Boat I'm restoring/building.

Until then, I'm just going to pick up a cheap one or two person tent at Walmart or something similar.

Why "pack" real food??....you are on a fishing trip....catch your muskies, then change patterns to something that can bring in some bass...or even better hook a couple walleyes and cook them up fresh on the grill with a little butter, lemon and some herbs. :chef:

BTW I have a tent-cot and enjoy the ease setting up camp...as long as you are not claustrophobic you should be fine. :)

There are a ton of meals you can do with a simple backpackers stove. I like to pre-package frozen spaghetti in vacuum seal bags then boil it in the bag in camp. Pack packing stoves fall down when t comes to fine heat control so anything that you can boil works well.

The two cooler concept work with a family as well. Just keep a small cooler with drinks and snacks so people aren't going into the big food cooler all day.

FWIW I slept on the boat more than a few times as a kid on Lake Mead, I'd rather sleep on the shore.
