FJ Front Runner Slimline II

Well, I finally got rid of the pesky stock FJ roof rack and pulled the trigger on a Front Runner Slimline II for my cruiser. I do have to give a shout out to Matt Green at Exploration Outfitters, Matt not only answered a few hundred emails from me on his day off, but he got me a screaming deal on the rack that I could not pass up. Please give Matt a call or email. Amazing guy to work with. Thanks, Matt.

No on to the show.

The Front Runner is packed very nice and clean. Box weighs in at 77lbs.

Preparing the rack for assembly. Take your time with this, it does go together quite quickly, but leave everything really loose as far as bolts go until all parts are together. This allows you to get all the bolts started and everything square. Then tighten everything up.

I will spare you the details on how I actually got it on the roof to install it. But I laid down a bunch of towels and picked it up and slid it across the roof. I didn't have a helper as my wife is only 5 ft tall and she was at work. Here it is installed and ready to go. The under mount table rack is REALLY!! close to the roof. it doesn't touch, but once loaded it might hit the roof. So only time will tell. I might have to change its orientation on the rack. I will say this, the directions could be updated to help you figure out what slats to place the mounting brackets on. I was not very clear and I did have to look at the website photos a few times to get it right. But that's my only gripe.

Here are the brackets for mounting the Foxwing Awning. I got them from Rhino Rack, Part# 31104. They are really beefy and mount under the front runner perfectly.

I have driven it to check for wind noise, and I didn't really hear anything over what I'm used to with the stock rack. But then again it was not at Highway speeds, so I will have to keep you posted later on. I'm totally impressed by the manufacturer for this product. It is incredibly well made, super strong and exactly what I wanted. I know there are several options on the market, and it took me forever to commit to this product. But after talking to people and to Matt, I knew this was the direction I wanted to go. It is the best product I could find for my application and I couldn't be happier with my decision. Thanks.

Looks great! Not having a helper is hard, so good job on finding a way to do it solo. What does the manufacturer state is the correct clearance range? There is variation in vehicle production, sometimes this explains issues like the one you described. I had a similar issue with my rack, and the manufacturer made taller brackets when I supplied photos. :)

They really don't supply any info as far as clearance goes. I'm going to take a few pictures later to send to them. Maybe they will come up with some thing. I think the rear could actually use a 80mm bracket other than the 70mm bracket supplied with the original kit. I do love this thing. I mounted my awning brackets from Rhino Rack yesterday and they fit perfect and blend in with the rack with no modifications what so ever.
