fj40 donaldson air filter mounting question

for anybody who's mounted a donaldson air filter on their fender, wondering if any support was needed from underneath? the unit i purchased turns out to be pretty heavy, and i'd hate to see what it could do to the cruiser's fender on some washboard backroads.
i'm planning on mounting the filter on the other side, the picture is just for reference.

That filter is awesome. Where did you find it? Is it a specific item for your 'Cruiser, or is it meant for something else?

i picked it up off ebay for $18, filter included. it's a medium duty air filter, suitable more for tractors, heavy equipment, mining trucks. the only thing that makes these filters specific is the cfm rating. donaldson covers the whole range of cfm that any vehicle would require. few rubber elbows, hoses and clamps and it could be fitted to your vehicle too.

That is a super slick looking setup.

I have always wanted to do something similiar, but put the intake at snorkel level.

Like so....

So what cfm is that or do you have a part number? I have seen several of these over the years on trucks that Spectre had brought in from Au.

I don't know about the strength of the wing to body mounting, but you might consider pop riveting a metal plate along the flat part of the wing to strengthen the point where the filter mounts to the wing. An additional plate should stop any flexing where the filter is bolted on. By the way $18 is a REAL deal. Its closer to a $70 filter.

I had space to mount mine on the underside of the wing. Mine is the 6 inch diameter version. Yours appears to be the 8 inch version from your picture. Do you have the part number for yours?

For scale reference the tyres are 33.3 inch diameter

I decided to keep my snorkel length short and to have minimal changes in air flow direction. I don't know about you but I never notice any real thinning out of the dust between the bottom of my windscreen and the top. I also didn't want a big 3 inch diameter tube blocking my vision and presenting additional opportunities to snag a branch.

Well after all those pics (and some research), I think I'll be able to cram one of the larger units 1/2 way through my passenger fender. That is exactly what I have been searching for....EP and the members within come through again!

it's too bad the design of the air filter is structured the way it is. aesthetically i would love it to look that way. it's not an inline filter though. you have the precleaner feeding into the outlet of the filter, it's from that end that i need to feed into the carb.

good advice, thanks for chiming in. it's a 9" diameter filter, about 20 lbs. i like the idea of adding a plate. the simpler the better. another issue i have to tend to is getting a topspin or full view precleaner that is a smaller diameter than the raincap i currently have. i will have an issue if i leave it on, won't be able to lift the hood without taking the cap off. looks like you shouldn't have any problems with branches and those limb lifters you got there!

Yours is larger diameter and a little shorter than mine. The specs look like it could handle a large displacement small block V8.

Not all Donaldson filter elements are on the shelf at every truck stop so it pays to have a good precleaner in place to extend filter life on dusty trails and one or two spare filter elements on the shelf at home.

Before I decided which precleaner I wanted I made a comparison between the two types. I think the metal and glas version has a more "industrial strength" look to it vs a plastic prefilter. But ... Think about field repairs if you accidentally whack the prefilter on a limb or rock and break it. Break the glass and you are SOL for a precleaner. Break the plastic and a dab of plastic cement or a wrap of duct tape and you are functional again.

Also the plastic top spin is self cleaning. It drops dirt out as it works. The older design glass one collects the dirt and you need to periodically stop and clean the bowl if yo want it to keep working.

Prefilters use a spinny thingie to separate out the dirt. It has a minimum airflow below which the spinny thingie does not work and there is a maximum flow rate beyond which the air flow becomes restricted. If you are going to have a prefilter it should be chosen carefully to work within your engine's normal operating range.

I use the top spin #H002437. It has a 3 inch dia outlet, is 6.38 " dia and the CFM flow rate is 90-200 CFM. My Land Rover is powered by a Ford 302. What the specs mean to me is that the prefilter works in the engine's 1000 to 3000 RPM range. It will be a little restrictive at full acceleration and above 3000 RPM. My high range fourth gear puts me at 65 MPH @2750 RPM and 75 MPH at around 3000 RPM.

The next large prefilter has an operating flow range of 200-450 CFM. I would need to keep my 5L engine above 3000 RPM for it to work.

Anyway something to think about.

Just thought of something. Check the finish on the inside of the filter. The person who painted mine didn't do the best job on the inside of mine so I repainted the inside to inhibit rust formation.

Good luck with yours

what, you've never blown glass out in the field before? haha. good call on the topspin, i don't know what the price differences are, but i have been eyeing the h002427. the air filter i'm looking to use has an inlet with a 4.5" diameter.

so are you saying that the 200-450 cfm topspin, provided it's what my air filter requires, wouldn't be suitable for my stock 2f inline 6? i haven't figured out the rpm's and cfm's, but figured it would be easier to restrict the air than open it up.

My initial guess is that you would end up with eye candy that would be the envy of all the mall terrain vehicle drivers but do nothing on the trail beyond keeping the rain out. Figure it out for yourself:

There's no reason why you could not use a reducer on the intake. or you can just skip the precleaner idea and carry an extra filter element or two on the trail.

If it were me, I'd paint the inside to keep the unit from rusting.
