FJ60 Drive Shaft & Slip Joint Rebuild - Questions

So today with the light rain we are getting I decided to go ahead and grease all the Drive Shafts/Slip Joints and U-Joints. Well I was on the second slip joint and as I was pressing grease In I noticed it was coming out up by the U-Joint and not at the slip joint seal.....

So looks like after removing all the crud and feeling around with my finger a plug of some sort is starting to come out?

So im pretty sure I will have to drop that shaft and rebuild it, and of course rebuild the other as well with new U-Joints. what all do I need for parts to rebuild these things? and are the parts available through Toyota or better places?

I will start digging into the FSM and see what I can find, but figured id get some input here as well

I went back out and cleaned it up so I and you could see it, was under the normal 1/2" of crud

Toyota u-joints are by FAR the best; a bit spendy but worth it and superior to all others. Available from any dealer. The new u-joints come with new needle bearings, caps, and clips, all the parts you need. A shop press is handy to disassemble/reassemble the joints, but if the old ones are not too corroded you may be able to do them with a big vise or even a big enough C-clamp.

Okay, then when I go down to get the other parts they just called to tell me came in I will get a order for these in.

I was looking at the plug that started to come out. can I just press that back in after everything is cleaned up or is this something I can get new as well? Looks like I will be doing this around the same time I to the tie rods, drop links and knuckles. its going to be a long week under the FJ...

Do I need 3 of the same, I was reading that one is not a standard U-Joint?? - - Edit Double Cardan I guess is the name of this beast. rebuild not rebuild. looks like I can get parts but from reading post is a PITA to rebuild. Not to worried about the U joints but the ball looks to hang most people up.
- Other option is to replace the other 3 Universal Joints and just clean and grease the Double Cardan and reinstall.

Most simply swap the 3 joints and clean/grease the cardan. You can tap the end plug back into the seat, I'd recommend putting a couple of tack-welds on the cap to keep it from moving again under exessive grease or compression during suspension travel.

The OE joints rock BUT keep in mind the OE joints are made by Matsuba and you can shop around for Matsuba joints at a much lower pricing than OE ;)

Thanks again Kurt,

I got a quote from Dealer spendy is a understatement. at 80 each. I need to order a Knuckle Kit, Tie Rod/Drag Link Kit and will probably just get 3 joints at the same time. I saw you had them listed but what brand are they? How would you rate them to the OEM brand?

I changed the oil, filter and air filter today, and replaced oil with 15w-40 so we will see how she likes it.

Next on the schedule is valve lash as I know they are out of spec from the sound of engine. Valve cover gasket is on order and will do that when it gets in. past that I think I have gone through the truck pretty much head to toe. all the gear oil and transmission oil will be changed after I do the Knuckle Rebuild. It was changed 2 years ago but I feel better if I know it was done myself.

Ours = Matsuba joint in Matsuba box
Toyota = Matsuba joint in Toyota box

:D

There are some joints we can't get aftermarket and in those cases we stock the OE Toyota option exclusively. In fact we stock the OE of all joints.

Sounds like you're getting it all sorted
