FJ60 Engine Swap - 2F-E or 3F-E or Diesel

I have 82 FJ60 with around 60K miles. I have been wanting to go the fuel injected route for a while. I've talked to a few people and it sounds like for any injected option it's best to find a 3F-E motor and start swapping things.

So I have access to a FJ62 that I am debating as a parts donor just not sure if I should go for the 3F-E swap or just do the 2F-E upgrade. The only issue is the 3F-E motor probably has 230k miles on it. I know they last forever but I would think a rebuild would be wise if I were to use it.

Not really sure where to start with the diesel option other then I was told you really need to want a diesel. I would only go for a toyota diesel option not the cummins route.

An H55 5-speed is on the list as well.

Thanks,

Jim

Only 60k miles????

A good 2F with the OEM carburetor runs amazingly well. If you REALLY wanted to go down the EFI route, you can keep the 2F block and run the head from the 3F-E. You can get the head dipped and shaved and the injectors tuned it should be good. Plan on lots of 62 parts coming over like the air filter and an alternator upgrade (or steal from FJ62) for additional amp needs. I'm trying to remember if there were any 2F & 3F-E head mate issues, I don't think so and there aren't with latter-year 2F blocks, but maybe someone else can confirm 100%.

Budget 3x your initial estimate both in terms of $ and time. The wiring harness is a PITA. The H42 does very well behind the 3F-E if you don't want the drop the coin for an H55f. If you have a donor FJ62, take the 4.10 3rd members and swap in against the 60's 3.70s.

Diesel is awesome, but the F engines are really great and IMO not worth the $ value-wise for swap. That said, if you want a BJ60 donor vehicle with everything needed, contact me.

This is my planned route for a tired 2F I have sitting in an 87 '60....so I am anxious to follow this thread...and see what you decide to do...

There is a lot of info on 2FE converstions over in IH8MUD...some you kind of have to weed through to get to the meat and bones...

My understanding is the 2FE is basically a 3FE stroker...best of both words...
Diesel is still an option for my truck but the cheapest half cut at SOR is 11K...ouch...

I would totally do the 2FE. There's no reason to do the 3FE in your 60. The only scenario I see that it would make sense would be if you had a tired 350k mile 2F and a low mile 3FE and you wanted to keep cost to a minimum. At 60k your 2F short block should be good to go for a long time still; just rebuild the head and you'll be set for many many miles. You get the bump in power and torque, the ease and reliability of fuel injection, and still all Toyota for a LOT smaller investment (both time and money) than a diesel.

I'm waffling between the ease and low cost of a Chevy TBI setup on my 2F and all the advantages of a 2FE. I'm leaning pretty heavily towards the 2FE route.

And the H55 will make you smile every time you move that shifter over and up on the highway.

Yeah, only 60k miles so i'm going to take it easy on the upgrades. It's in very good condition. I think adding fuel injection and the 5 speed it would be a very nice rig for a long time. Since it's not a tired motor I think the 2F-E is probably the best option. There is a FJ62 in the area that has a bad title so off-road only. This is where I was going to steal all the parts.

I have thought of trading the 60 towards one of the Profit Cruiser diesel pickups.

I do hang out on I8Mud but it's a little difficult to keep up. There is a good 2F-E parts list. Everyone here is a little easer to get a long with. :)

Also very helpful information on the gearing from the 62.

It sounds like the chevy vortec is a very popular option because you can find the engines pretty easily, but it's not a toyota anymore.

Just here...

Why isnt is a Toyota anymore? You know that the 2F is basically a Chevy I6, right? The way I see it, youre just leaping ahead a little. If youre going to be driving it a lot, I would go with either the V8 or a diesel. SOR is great but you can find a wrecked 60 or 62 Canad diesel for FAR less than what they sell the half cuts for. I havent read anything negative about the Vortec swaps into a Cruiser.

If you want a diesel or H55F pm me. I see them for sale all the time. A good running BJ60 with H55F with rust and around 200-250k miles will run around $3-4k. I can also look for just the H55F for you, if you like.
