FJ60 transmission/clutch issue

FJ60 with 261K on the clock. Trying to sort out major issues.

I learned a lot studying the forums but haven't come across anything to help me.

Issue that I'm trying to sort out: There is a loud spinning metal/grinding noise coming from what appears to be the front of the transmission. I removed the shifter boot to help listen.

Details: In neutral there is no noise. Clutch pedal feels normal and truck goes into all gears very smoothly. Transmission pulls hard in every gear and doesn't come out of gear on it's own.

In gears 1-3 there is very little to no noise. In 4th gear it gets very loud, especially under power. In any speed and with the tranny in any gear I can push the clutch in and the sound immediately goes away. This has me thinking that it is the throwout bearing and I need to install a new slave cylinder.

Do you guys think I'm on the right track?

Without hearing it, I would guess throw out bearing.

Wouldn't the throw out bearing make noise in neutral as well? I'm going to take a little video later this week.

Yes, the throw-out bearing or the pilot bearing would make the same noise in every gear including neutral. I would suspect one of the shaft bearings (the one closest to 4th gear; can't remember where it is without looking in the manual).

Seems like the best course of action is as follows:
Pull the transmission and transfer case.
Clean everything.
Rebuild the clutch
Replace transmission with a good unit.
Replace oil pan gasket while i'm in there.

Any other "while I'm in here" items you can think of?

For sure, replace the engine rear main oil seal; it will never be easier, especially if you have the oil pan off - you can take the rear-most main bearing cap off, and the old seal slides right off without a puller and the new one slides right on without a driver.

I also always replace the pilot bearing and throwout bearing any time I drop a transmission whether they need it or not. Cheap insurance. Use only OEM Koyo bearings, they are much superior to any aftermarket replacements.

Have your flywheel machined as part of the clutch rebuild. Use a machine shop that knows Land Cruisers; the 2F flywheel is stepped.

Call Georg at Valley Hybrids if you need a new trans. He sold a buddy of mine a solid 4spd for a really good price. He also has access to H55's.

Cheers

I would second the recommendation to talk to Georg.

What year is your truck? There are a couple of different versions of the 4 speed used in the 60 series behind the F engine. The later style has a 100mm spacer on the back of the trans case between the trans and the split transfer case. This is where 5th gear would be on the H55. The longer 4 speed was stock equipment in years where both a 4 and 5 speed were available.

Listened to your video, that sounds like a bad bearing. Which bearing? No idea.

Have you checked the fluid levels in the trans and transfer case? I'd drain them each separately into clean containers and then filter the fluid for debris. The metal flakes (if any) can help diagnose problems.

This is a July 1985 build. it has the longer of the two 4speeds that were installed in the 60's.

Unfortunately a 5 speed is outside of my budget so I'm on the hunt for a replacement h42.

I did change the fluid in both the tc and tranny with very little found in the fluid. It was surprisingly clean.

I think the longer H42s are a little more difficult to find since they were only used for a couple of years. You might have luck posting a wanted ad in the parts forum at Mud.
