FJ60 VS FJ80 advice

I have owned a 40 (1973), a 60 ('87 with 5 speed, OME, and FF rear), and now a '96 FZJ80. I loved them all.

The 40 had the most soul.

The 60 had the most style.

The 80 is the best truck - on and off-road.

Horses for courses.

I currently own a 1985 60 and a 1996 80 with 1fz. Ive also owned a 92 80 with the 3FE. In my opinon, you will always be dissapointed with the power (or lack thereof - they are cool but slow pigs!) I agree with one of the above posters - go with a 95-97 80 series and cut the eventual corner. Especially with the children, I would consider the extra safety built into the more modern 80 series.

I love the "soul" of the 60 but whenever i get into the 80, it truly is night and day for power, handling, braking, quiet, smoother ride, features, etc. The 80 may look big but wheels small. With lockers Ive seen many 80's go places where others struggle.

Of course last but not least, get a mechanic to fully inspect any likely purchase and see what youre getting into. I fyou find a incredibly maintained rig that needs close to nothing that gets moved to the top of the list no matter which type Land Cruiser it is.

Good luck! please post up with whatever you end up getting.

Thanks everyone! I have decided to save a little bit more and buy a late 90's 80. After driving the 60 and the 91 80 I decided I will buy a late model 80 and one day buy a nie 60 to build as a second rig! Thanks again for all you input.

Now here is another question.. My wife really wants me to look at a Sequoia. Can these be built like a Cruiser? I like the size but beyond what I see of them on the road I know nothing about them.

They make them in 4WD and you can build them, they share some aftermarket parts with the Tundra (whose drive train and front end they are built on). A pretty large off-road vehicle IMO but folks have expedition/overlanding vehicles much larger than that.

We had a 2WD Sequoia for years as a family road car/DD and it was the best of its kind we've ever had. Powerful, comfortable, dead quiet, handles like a dream (for a car that size). One of my sons and his family is still driving it and at over 200,000 miles it still runs great with zero repairs ever and it still doesn't burn or leak a single drop of oil.

youre comparing the most beautiful Land Cruiser ever made to the ugliest Land Cruiser ever made. if the 60 is rust free, get it .

They are both great rigs. Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder...
