FJ62 Transfercase ?

It's an excellent transfer case, and is arguably the best of the Toyota split cases. I'd convert it to manual shift which in my opinion is less trouble prone. The part numbers needed to do this are available on IH8MUD.

In the USA the split cases went from 81-90.

81-4/86 are basically the same with a 34mm idler shaft, and manual shift.

4/86 to the end of 87 they were the same, except with a 38mm idler shaft.

88-90 they retained the 38mm idler AND added needle bearings to the output gears where they ride on the output shaft. They also went to a vacuum 4wd shift, but the high/low continued to be a manual shift. This transfer is so strong, that I'll be it could go 500k miles if you keep oil in it.

The last time I rebuilt the 60 and 62 tcase it seemed that the input gears in the 62 were a little wider than the 60 as well. I also have a couple of 60 cases with spun idler shaft bushings. Is anyone repairing these cases?

The gears on the idler shaft are supported by bearings, not bushings, so I'm not sure what you mean. All the rebuild kits come with a new idler shaft, and new bearings.

Ah yes, there is a thrust bushing on each side of the case, when the thrust bushings wear they can and do spin aginst the case and wear the inside of the case at the bushing.

The only way those thrust bushings should spin, is if they were improperly installed. They have a tab that keeps them from rotating. If they did sping and wreck the case half, it's probably toast, as those bushings only come in 1 thickness.

I have seen this in 2 of the 5 cases I have had apart, not sure why mabey wear or flex in the case. I have successfully repaired one case using JBWeld, I roughed the non bearing side and "glued" the bushing to the case with all the gears and shaft in place, let it dry took it apart and removed any excess at the new thrust bushing. I was much younger and without resources to buy another new case. I did drive it for years 'till I traded up to a nicer FJ60.

I've tried to compile a good amount of Split T-Case tech here, I've got a bunch more to include such as pics and updated specs but for the most part its current. At a minimum there are ~6 different variations, for the most part are all interchangeable with some external parts needing changes too (flange patterns, etc). Hope its helpful:

That is helpful, I recently exchanged the 60 T/C with a 62 T/C. I had to replace the vacuum shift with a my manual one and drill and tap a hole for a detent but other than that it worked. I may be able to get my hands on another 62 T/C but its attached to an automatic.
