FJ80 refurbishments

Ok, working my way through a long list of issues on the 80. Starting to make some progress thanks to my bud TJ and his crew at UP Autotech. I also pulled off the basket, limb wires, and mounted my RTT via a set of Thule bars. Took it out yesterday for a weekend of route scouting for the UPO trip. Had to cut it short after having it die on me out in the middle of BFE. Managed toget it started and limped it to a nearby town and after some time discover a crack in my intake hose between the ribs. This was midnight now, duct taped the crap out of it, still didn't start then, at 5am finally discovered another issue, a loose wire connection, got it started and b lined it back home. What a night. I drive the most unreliable vehicle in the world, a Land Rover for two years and never get stranded, then take out the most reliable and get stranded first time out, go figure right? ;-)

Looks good Kristian
I am looking forward to the trip next week. Is that bridge on the route?
I will be taking my 80 (HDJ81) on the trip, yours looks great!

A loose electrical connection vs. the entire electrical system - you are far ahead even with the one tiny problem! Trust me - I have owned three Classic's and a DII. Now I'm Toyota all the way! Oh, what a feeling!

Thanks for the desktop pic! Fantastic!

Thanks! Still working the bugs out, hopefully have most of the big issues dealt with by trip time. Yep, that is part of the route. You are going to drown me with jealousy of your HDJ81.....drool.... Don't even tell me what kind of range you are getting with it...

Ha ha, yeah, I just got rid of the Disco so no looking back but that vehicle was pretty amazing for me. Had some little issues here and there no doubt but Lucas was very kind to me. Once I get my 80 sorted I will feel a bit more confident driving it hard in the wilds.

I do love the 1HD-T engine and it gets great range, but I get sent to the back of the pack often because my stinky Diesel (no friends). The 81 is a work in progress, jealous of your lift; snorkel; ARB bumper; tires; and RTT. I will collect these things as I keep the wifey happy with trips like UP Overland and funds of course.
Is TJ a ARB/ OME retailer?

He is in the process of becoming one. He is planning on being a fully functioning repair facility that deals ARB, OME, and some other goodies and also does installations. Right now he has been slamming with general automotive repairs in his facility. He also has fabbed up sliders and some other goods. If you have an OME kit and needed to have it installed for the trip shoot him a line. Coming from Ontario you will drive right by his shop on the way to Marquette.

Very cool! Thank, yeah, I really have missed driving this truck. 80's are such great vehicles. Getting some driveability issues sorted. There may or may not be pictures of me sitting under the hood with a headlamp trying to solve a no start in the middle of the night floating around the internet from last weekend. haha It will be great again!

Kristian,

Which size tent did you get? small, medium, or Large? I like how you mounted it so it unfolds off the back or front.

Its the tent I had on the Discovery, it is a medium. I like the rear opening manner so that with the enclosure attached and the tail gate down on the truck, I have a nice counter to use for cooking, etc to get out of the weather.

Not too much to report yet. I ended up doing some of the stuff on my list just to get the Cruiser ready for this past August's UP Overland trip. We fabbed up some new pieces for the exhaust down pipe only to have a new leak form up near the top of the exhaust manifold. Now I need to take the intake off to get a look at whether it is repairable or if I need to replace it. I have been traveling for work the past two months and will be gone most of the winter so the progress on stuff is glacial. I need to get stuff buttoned up by April for a couple of months of spring traveling, Overland Expo, and possibly a foray up to Alaska this summer. Will definately have a bunch of updates once I tear into it a bit more. Soon to come.. Windshield, set of 33x10.50 AT's, exhaust manifold repair, front axle service, fuel filter sock replacement (the in tank one, fun), RTT cover repair, and some other odds and ends. Some pics from bird hunting camp this fall and early winter.
