Flatbed ideas

Bringing back an oldie but goodie.

Saw this one on another board, I think this idea with a RTT would be just what I am looking for. My plan is to run a spare tire and custom extended range fuel tank underneath the deck, what do you think?

Oh yeah this is what I am starting with, 93 standard cab. Kids are older and the wife and I are looking forward to Baja, Moab, Death Valley, SCORE race chasing and who knows what else.

93 Dodge diesel, with a flatbed, and let me tell you, you can haul alot of stuff. Mine has slots were I hope to weld up my removable rack soon for expedition. I also have wood slats for hauling dirt, rock, furniture, pavers, hay, etc....flatbeds are the way to go. I'll post pics of my plans soon.

2011 Nissan Frontier with Ute tray

I'm in the process of doing the same thing. I bought a Ute tray from the Washington based rep around $2000 and installed it myself with $83 in hardware and steel. This is the first step towards an expedition type RV. Tactical Armor Group bumpers are on the way, custom boxes for under the bed and atop (under the FWC wings) will follow. My idea being to maximise storage outside the camper. Plus there is room for a 6'x3'x6" tray under the bed, which I'll fabricate with a welding buddy. Good luck with your quest.

Box Rocket

Here's a flat bed I built a while back for my 2nd Gen pickup. The truck was intended to be able to carry camping gear etc, but also rockcrawl so the bed is pretty short to give the best departure angle.

The main hoop of the cage is the only permanent portion of the cage. The top/rack and rear of the cage all come off as a seperate peice for those time when I needed to carry gear that was tall, or for whatever reason might be wider than the deck. The frame of the deck had pockets for some stake sides as well.

The whole thing was welded to the frame of the truck with a new rear crossmember and a modified horsecollar crossmember to still allow for a 35" tire to fit underneath using the factory spare tire winch.

All-in-all I was very pleased with how it came out and the basket was great for lighweight gear. This was built before the days of RTT's so take that for what it is. Thought it might give some ideas to others looking at flatbeds.

here you can see how the top/rear of the cage attached to the main hoop.

modified crossmember and custom shock mounts. Needed to do this (and tweak the fuel tank bracket) to make room for a 35" spare to fit underneath.
