Flip pac longevity

I am been reading some stories on the Flip Pac camper shell setup. What is the longevity of the torsion bar. Reading some of the posts, of course they are very old Flip Pacs, it seems the torsion bar breaks and some serious leaking damage.

I kinda of like the setup, but how does it last.

My bar lasted about 7 years. It worked fine and then one day I went out and it was snapped in half. The damage you have seen on other threads is water damage from not sealing out the water. If you keep your cap sealed up you will never see that kind of damage. Yes Vince is on 10 plus years but I think his has lost about all its torsion, but at least it has not snapped!

You've had an ezi-awn and a flip-pac, what are your thoughts on quality and function?

Both are very high quality but very different. The Eezi Awn mattress is thinner, but the travel cover is what drove me nuts - PITA to get it just right and NOT very UV/weather resistant IMO. Expect to buy a new travel cover every couple years if you leave the RTT on the truck full time. If I had to do the RTT thing again, it would be a Maggiolina for ease of opening/closing and the ability to leave bedding inside - and the durability of the fiberglass shell.

The FliPac has a better mattress than the EA and the fiberglass shell is tops for UV/weather resistance when closed. When opened you have a changing room as well as an area to sit inside, out of the weather without "going to bed". I also have the luxury of leaving all the "house" stuff inside the shell 24/7 (bedding etc) whereas the EA needed everything removed in order to be able to close it properly. It's nice to open the FP up and climb right in with everything you need waiting for you inside.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. I guess I will be leaning more toward the Flip Pac for now.:victory:

My shell is one of the ones that failed somewhat recently but like Bella said, it was entirely operator error. The PO neglected to seal the gaps around the hinges at all so water got in and caused the metal hinge parts to rust through.

Mine is about 15 years old now, with about 500k miles on it between two rigs. The first torsion bar lasted 13 years. The tent has held up great with no tears. Some of the mesh in the windows is starting to crack and tear now, from creasing when folded up, might have to deal with that this spring. I need to replace the window gaskets too this spring, for the first time.

No real leaks, no significant failures. Awesome product.

The only thing that bugs me is the side windows shimmy open when driving They open about an inch every couple hundred miles. Drives me nuts...

Flip Pac Torsion Bar

I have had my flip pac for just over 6 years and I am replacing my torsion bar for the second time. Flip pac does not understand "customer service". You call them and it may be days to weeks before the get to you and they do not regularly stock the torsion bar. It can take up to 3 months to get a new one ******!

Other than that it is an awesome product. If they would just invest in the product (water proof tent fabric, lighten the design, more robust torsion bar and take care of the customer) they would rule the world.
