After our mattress was worn out we tried a couple of alternatives and finally settled on one of these: http://www.nemoequipment.com/nemo2012-cosmoair-and-pillowtop-pad. The two person one with the two air inserts. It has a foam wedge to prevent a gap between the pads.
We can pump it up in about a minute and deflate it in about 10 seconds. Once deflated, we can store our sleeping bag and our kids bags up there too. Its not quite as convenient as having the mattress glued to the top but its easy to get everything situated on the nylon cover then flip the super light lid over.
It's not quite as wide as the original mattress but is the right length. Our The North Face Twin Peaks double sleeping bag fits nicely on it.
