FlipPac mattress and "gap cover"

So my Flip didn't come with a mattress, but we've been using 3" thick tri-fold futon we have that fits perfectly footprint-wise, and is comfortable, but is too thick to leave in place when folding up. What thickness works, and does anyone have a good recommendation for light but comfortable (and not too expensive) foam?

Also, the foam and fabric pad that bridges the gap between lid was pretty crusty, and also tended to flop down when closing the lid, and getting caught. It's also difficult to reach over the cab and tuck it in. So I pulled it out. Does the stock one work when it's in good condition? Mine is intact enough that I could use it as a pattern to make a new one, but I'd like know if that would really work before I break out the sewing machine, as I'm not that handy a tailor. I've thought about trying to preload it so it always folds up out of the gap. For now I'm using a scrap of carpet to keep the bug and breeze out but it's another thing to stow.

Thanks - dman

My brand new one works fine and always folds in properly. I never see anything sticking out the front edge (hinge edge) of the FlipPac when closing. I only need to tuck the sides and occasionally the very rear. How long it will stay in that condition I don't know!

Sorry I can't measure the pad for you - I'm on the other side of the country from my FlipPac at the moment.

Like wise, my front never sticks out, I think that will be worth the time/effort. Mattress - I can measure mine (if it stops raining) - I would suggest spending the money on a good foam (a comfortable night sleep is worth it) I don't know what what it is (closed foam?) but some research will answer that.

Mine didn't come with a mattress either. I use an inflatable camping pad, an XL thermarest neo air dream (the purple one). It's kinda pricey, but super super comfortable. I'm pretty sure 2 of the XL's will fit. Alternatively I figure Cabella's/Campmor etc should have similarly comfortable air/foam mats at half the price.

I can leave the pad mostly inflated & just pull it back towards the bed of my truck before I flip to break camp. The hammock that holds the tent from falling into the truck bed holds it up.

Setting up camp, I can just flip, slide the back pole of the hammock up & right a bit, then I just launch the pad forward. A couple breaths and it's firmed up plenty for me.

I also put down thin closed cell foam where the original mattress was. I used grey garage anti fatigue mat you can buy at harbor freight in 6' rolls.

If you end up putting down some antifatigue mat, I suggest velcroing it in. Rather than double stick tape (as I did). Moisture will get under the mat & it'll get funky if you can't dry it out well.

You could add a piece of bungee cord to keep the gap cover sucked in. If it's spent a lot of time closed up with the gap cover exposed, it might be "trained to do stay that way. I'd just take the CB antenna or a stick and pop it back in as you close it for now.

My Flippac is less then 2 years old and the fabric flops out the front 50% of the time. I have been relying team work to deal with it.
