Flogging the proverbial dead horse... Dodge auto style!

So I have to ask another 1st gen Dodge question... The 92-93s that came with autos were 727 HD correct? If so, are they any stronger than the 4spd autos behind 2nd gen Cummins trucks? Thanks for your time y'all!

The auto offered in mid year 91 through 93 was the A518 aka 46rh and is a non lockup transmission with overdrive. The 727 was offered in the 89- early 91 Cummins trucks and came with 3.07 gears to try to make up the difference of not having an OD gear. The early 2nd gens 94 and 95 had a 47RH and I think 96 is when they went to the 47RE. all the automatics in 2nd gens are Lockup type transmissions. The autos in the 2nd gens are a little stronger but where you'll notice a difference in power getting to the ground is the lockup. The A518 can be built to be a good transmission and a lot of the problems with them stem from the sub par converter Dodge used with them in the Diesel trucks.

Clear as mud?

Thanks for the info. Have a 93' w250 w/auto. Not looking forward to that thing breaking. Has an aux. aftermarket trans cooler besides the factory one. At servicing, the tech says it looks fine (good trans fluid color, no metal in the pan, bands where they are supposed to be). But I don't want to smoke that thing.

So I drive like grandpa, in a slow dodge diesel. People that are in a hurry love me.

Dave Goerend and DTT (www.dieseltrans.com) are two very reputable auto beefers. Stefan or Bill at DTT will answer any questions you have. You don't have to dump a fortune into it to make it bombproof. After that, the power can be kicked up a notch.

I have a '93, for a long time I worried about the trans. The A518 is based on the 727 but with an OD. 275k miles and still going, I do wish it had lockup though.

I'd put a temperature gauge on it and you should be good to go. Don't get it hot and it should last a very long time.

My brother has the 518 with a Mag Hytec pan (holds much more fluid than stock) and a very large auxiliary cooler + the stock cooler. He has 3.07 gears and even without the lockup it runs fairly cool. 3.07's and an o/d trans behind the ve pump Cummins make for VERY good fuel mileage
