Following in Suntinez and HMRs footsteps with a Tiger GT

I've been lurking on expedition portal for quite a while and finally decided that I should post about my Tiger GT.

Back in April my wife and I went to the expo in Amato to look at slide campers for my Dodge 2500. On the way back home to Phoenix we stopped in Tucson to look at a 1994 Tiger GT AWD that popped up on Craigslist the previous day. It turned out that the seller was only a few miles from my parents house. We looked at the Tiger, went to my parents house, brought them with us to look at it again and bought it.

Due to a very heavy work schedule we had to leave it in Tucson for several months until I could get some time to clean out the garage and sell a car to make room for the Tiger. Finally on labor day weekend we brought the Tiger home. I held my breath and very carefully watched the roof and the garage opening as my wife pulled him into the garage and to my delight it fit perfectly!

I am amazed at the size of this thing and HMR had it right with the comment about the bugs bunny cartoon! I have been carefully following his build and have shamelessly copied some the excellent ideas he has had. I especially like the reflective insulation used as window coverings, those things work fantastic! I plan on replacing the fridge with a ARB unit later this year. HMR what did you use to plug the propane line to the fridge when you removed it?

I also copied Suntinez's idea about using a Trasharoo for leveling blocks and other 'dirty' items storage.

Although I am limited on suspension mods due to the height I am very pleased with the ride of the Tiger. A previous owner replaced the composite leafs with steel springs and replaced the rear shocks. I plan on putting Bilsteins on this winter even though the currently installed Monroes do a pretty good job. The front end is nice and tight and overall it is a very clean van. No visible wear on the upholstery, great paint, well cared for and would never guess it has 110K miles on it until you look at the odometer.

I put on new load range D tires in the stock 215/75R15 size for peace of mind due to the weight. I weighed it with full fuel tank, full propane, no passengers and no water and came in just under 5600 lbs. I figure by the time the water tank is full, my wife, two dogs and myself are on board I'll be at the 6100lb GVW and will probably wind up about 2-300lbs over when fully loaded. We took it up to the Mogollon rim in AZ this past weekend and it rode great, I have no concerns about the suspension or weight.:smiley_drive:

I am curious if either Suntinez or HMR have weighed their rigs?

SWEET :wings:

You're gonna have so much fun in that thing! I've seen HMR's since he's been fixing it up, some really smart changes that make it a lot more functional.

I can't believe it fit in your garage with those roof vent covers - jealous!

You may not have the problem since the leaf springs were swapped out, but I added coilover shocks in the rear and a set of ride-rite airbags. That made a world of difference - the rear end used to sag so much I'd bottom out on uphill right hand turns. And the new tires (BFG ATs 225/70/16s) make the ride so much better.

I weighed mine on the way back from picking it up in OK, with 2 adults, full fuel, ~1/2 tank of water. Can't recall exactly but the number 5800 keeps popping into my mind. I want to weigh it again with all my stuff in there.

Did I meet you at OvExpo? Prepare yourself for lots of questions about it, people always coming over to ask.

Congratulations!! We'll definitely be needing more pics :sombrero:

Actually I had to take the MAXAir vents off to get it in the garage, no way it would have fit with those on there!

I don't think we met at Overland Expo, unless I didn't realize it was you. :)

I am already getting lots of questions about the Tiger, people seem really disappointing when I tell them they don't make them anymore.

Congrats! That Tiger looks brand new!

HMR what did you use to plug the propane line to the fridge when you removed it?
Your local Ace Hardware will have the plug. It looks like this:

Use a little liquid sealant or "Plumbers Tape" on the threads to keep it airtight.

Thanks for the plug info HMR!

We just got back from a two week tiger trip. From AZ to Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon. 3500 miles total and the Tiger drove like a dream. I have never driven such a comfortable vehicle, I thought that I would have problems with the limited driver foot well area but it never bothered me.

The only issues were with the RV portion. We have a couple of small water system leaks that I need to track down, fortunately both leaked on the outside of the Tiger. The isolation solenoid started to intermittently not pull in, thereby not charging the house battery. I first noticed this when we got to Mammoth hot springs in Yellowstone with a nearly dead house battery from running the 3-way refrigerator all day. I bypassed the solenoid with a automotive fuse pigtail that allowed me to connect the two batteries together when traveling and pull the fuse at night to isolate them. Of course I forgot to pack the brand new isolation solenoid I have at home.

I loved being able to park the Tiger anywhere and even go down the roads that said "No RVs". As usual we got lot's of questions about the Tiger nearly everywhere we went.

We did not plan anywhere enough time for Bryce Canyon, that place is just spectacular, we are already planning on returning next spring and take our time seeing it. My picture do not do the scenery justice but I have attached a couple, one from the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Bryce Canyon, and the Tiger parked in the RV parking at Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone.

We also saw this cool van with a SAS at the Old Faithful Inn. Never did get to see the owner.

That looks like a great shakedown run for the Tiger!

I stopped by a scale a few days ago. With full fuel/water/propane/fridge/junk but no people or pups, the weight on my GT was 5790 lbs.

There a Astro Tiger parking near my house lately now with a few other RVs. I think they live in it. The RV people are generally nomadic until the police kick em out for staying too long.
Cool little vehicle though.
