Gren,
I'm coming to Bridgend just so we can have a pint or 4 and we can hit a geen lane or two. Never made it out to Wales-everyone in England speaks of it like a foreign land. Needless to say if you ever run across another of these proto type hoods with this art deco type stamping please acquire it for me through whatever means you deem necessary. In my barn/garage/shop I'll hang it on the wall. I already have a series 3 Stage 1 metal grill hanging on the wall amongst other esoteric motorsport items I have collected over the past 3 decades.
You have a very cool peice of Rover history incorporated into your truck there my friend.
Cheers,

Damn. Just when I thought I knew alot about Rovers, I get chumped like that.

Ok, so what's the story here?

Mark,
Not clear on the story myself. Proto type bonnet/hood. Not sure if it was for the stage 1 or defender but as you can see it has a raised center ridge stamped in for fore/aft rigidity with flare @ the rear. I think its all aluminum but will let Gren pipe in. First noticed it when he was chronicling the build of his truck from a pile of parts. Gren didn't you say you picked it up @ a swap meet ? The early Land Rover 90 decal on the hood instead of the later Defender is another nice touch.

Hi Mark/Doug, sorry for the delay as i tend to post when i'm in work.:D
I was looking for a bonnet for my 90 build & saw this one on ebay advertised as an early defender bonnet & the seller was quite close to me so I bought it for £70ish what I really wanted was a TD5 bonnet but a good one was a lot more, it was only when I saw it in the flesh it thought it oooh its odd.

The seller had it for a few years in his garage before he put it on ebay.
when I bought it it had a paper label marked land-rover solihul and a part number in pencil which my contacts in LR & bearmach were unable to trace.

It appears to be hand made as the castellations on the front edge are different sizes and the front edge is uneven underneath, the rivets are also the early type.
it is a single skin of ally and wobbles like hell if only the hood prop is used to hold it up hence the strut mods help stop it warping.
The frame was unpainted when i got it and apears to be attached to the skin by the back and front rivets and the F-R supports appear to be glued to the ally.

I have been told it was 1 of approx 9 that were made as a design exercise as part of the stage 1 or early 110 release. others were flat like a S2 & dished to take a spare and different features on others, they eventually settled on the plain center design and the other prototypes were used elsewhere on other rolling prototypes until they were broken up.

There are 2 dings on it that i wanted left in much to my paint guy's disgust, he also told me the castellations were uneven, & wanted to bondo the dings and file out a rough bit in the leading edge, Philistine.!

sorry for the bad pics..

regards all

Sick. New want. When it's raining do you still get a bit of water puddling up near the front of the bonnet?
