For exploration, not necessarily expedition

I purchased quite a few products from LMC for my old 1970 GMC short bed 4x4. I found the truck here locally with under a 100k on it in 1987. It had 280,000 on it when I sold it years ago, and I got more than I payed for it. That K5 will only appreciate in value as well.

http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cb/t.aspx

They all fit fine, and were very close to OE quality. Most of the parts I needed were interior related and all the window gaskets/door seals required replacement in the mid 90's.

Getting good quality leaf springs for the old K5 may be difficult. I bought several brands over the years, and ended up cobbleing together a set from parts of all of them to get the lift and ride quality I wanted. Most of the 4" inch springs are very stiff. I only wanted to clear 32's, so a 2.5" lift worked well with very minor trimming. Perhaps a set built to your specifications by Alcan or Deaver would fit the bill.

The steering box mount to the frame is very prone to failure - they crack very easily. There are weld on braces/patches available. The whole frame is prone to severe flex when off highway. The Blazer is less so due to the solid body, but none the less it bears watching. Mine was so well worn and flexible I was stripping cab mounts off the body...

The front 10 bolt and asscociated steering gear is also a weak point. I went thru ball joints and tierod ends sometimes on a semi-annual basis. The front axle also tend to bend pretty easily, especially the shortside tube. Even the tie rod itself was hard to get, and bent several over the years. The rear 12 bolt isn't much better - I went thru several over the years.

I assume it's the standard 350/350/NP205 combo? If so, that's a bullet proof T'case for sure. I cracked the Turbo 350 case on a trail just by diffin' the front end on rock at about 8 MPH (I didn't notice how deep the well worn ruts were, and caught a rock that only stuck up about 3" out of the swell - DOH!).

All in all it looks like a great project!

Does anyone know if the first and second gen K5's use the same front springs? If so I can recommend a stellar option from an unlikely source. I'll have to look up the exact p/n, so I'll wait for confirmation that they'll work.

This is their ride height after many years of use, and on 285/75R16's. They've been within 100 miles of La Paz, they've been on the Oregon Coastal Dunes, they've been all over the CA, and parts of NV and UT.

As far as the steering box brace, I consider that preventative maintenance, not a modification. The originator of those braces is Autofab.com, but ORD also sells them.

Hey, Joanne! I didn't know you were over here, too!

I think I know what really happened. Your cast iron camping gear finally outgrew your trooper's ability to tow, right? This is all about a V8 to haul dutch ovens!

As I recall, no they don't - the 67-72' front springs are really, really short. In stock form they are negative arched 2 leaf packs. I got my lift with a nearly flat spring - the 4" go positive arch.

Sounds almost exactly the springs that I first removed to place these springs under the '79 Sub. (I later moved them over to the '91.)

EDIT: Did a little searching. The Rancho front leaves are listed as being 43.57" flat length for the '69-'72's and 46.9" flat length for the '73-'91's. I believe that the springs I am using are the 86210's, which are not listed in the applications. These are a 9 leaf, 348 lbs.-in rated spring with a free arch of 3.47" and a center thickness of 2.47" Compare those to the 4" spring listed for the '69-'72's which is a 5 leaf, 720 lbs.-in rated spring with a free arch of 2.86" and a center thickness of 2.01"
Looks like both are centered pins, so trying to use the 86210's on a first gen would move the front axle back up to ~1-5/8" Might work, and it might not.

Life's too short to waste time at crappy websites.

You are closer to the truth than you know!!

I really LOVE the 1st generation Blazers and having the 350 means that when I have a load of iron I don't have to get out and push going up those long hills.

I used to have a 72 K5 blazer. That was a really fun truck. Tons of power, it was the year before all the emissions crap got on there and ruined them.

Good luck with the build! I am sure it will be a nice desert roamer. Are you going to pop the top off, or just leave it on there?

I'm Irish so the top will have to stay on or I'll look like a bright red lobster all the time. That said, I'll probably take it off from time to time just because it's so much fun to drive that way.

i just spent the last two hours reading your build then going back over to see what i missed...LADY you got skills, in my book the "dawg" just plain rocks,, you stated that you were not going to do the "show" circuit. well if you did i am positive that the crowds around the dawg would be as large as any other.........:wings:
as with most the first gen blazers are my favorite also,, so many possibilites enjoy look forward to this thread

I do get a lot of positive comments. I was in St. George Utah filling up and folks started to walk up and ask about it. Before long there was a crowd around it and no one was pumping gas. The attendant came out and asked me to pull out into the parking lot so that the customers waiting in line could pull up to the pumps.

When there are 2 or 3 of us traveling together it really makes folks take notice.

It's been a crazy busy last 6 weeks and doesn't look like it's going to slow down any time soon....

So far I've pulled out the old, non-functioning air conditioner. The interior carpeting has been stripped out and the floors washed out. The front "push bar" is long gone.

On the positive side, it has new plugs, wires, rotor, rotor cap and points. The steering was real sloppy, so the old drag link was replaced along with both tie rod ends. The steering is much tighter now.

I've also started collecting parts. I found an original set of seats and an original center console. Now I'm on the hunt for a rear seat. A friend of mine has offered me a 350 that has been machined and needs to be put together. He's a professional mechanic and will walk me through building the engine.

This is going to be a LONG project, but I'm really excited about getting started and making some progress. My initial thoughts were to take it back to near-stock, but now I'm thinking I may move a little toward an expedition setup without losing sight of the classic look.

It's going to be fun!

Great truck, keep the classic look, are you familiar with the resto mod theme? I think yours is a prime candidate.

Yep! That's the track I'm on. I want to keep it close to stock, but with a few additions that I want. The reason I bought it is because I love the look of them and I don't want to mess that up.

The guy before me put 10" wide rims and wide tires on it. I'm wanting to go to a more narrow and taller tire. Probably a 16" Rally Sport type rim. Somehow all the modern design aftermarket rims just don't look right on the old iron.

If (and that's a big if) I decide to lift it, I will only go with a 2" lift. Hardly seems worth it, but this is the "look" that I'm working towards.

(I would have bought this one but I didn't have the money at the time.)

What about this option?

There is one here in town that you could trade your top and tailgate for....

There used to be a scout II around where I live that was set up like that. It was pretty sweet. The only problem is that you can only have one passenger. It kinda removes the option of using it for anything else.

Those are pretty sweet. The Blazer Chateau was also in interesting idea in compact camping. I have a small teardrop style trailer to camp in so I think I'll keep the top and tailgate. :)
