get a 350, or regret it and swap trucks down the road like I'm looking at doing. Don't drive around in CA over your stickered limit, it's just a timebomb waiting to go off if you end up with a highway patrol officer or sheriff who wants to f$ck with you.

get the vinyl floor in the cab, Don't get the Ford bed liner. (it isn't called a rubber floor and you'll confuse other ford guys because they offer a vinyl floor in the cab)

get the camper package. 90% camper in the bed makes having the swap bar worth it.

Get the FX4 package and swap to fox 2.0s AND their steering stabilizer. Even though the FX4 shocks suck, it's still a good package, gets you some modest coverage underneath (you said you aren't going to be doing any heavy offroading so they should be fine), and hill descent which is a nice option. Also, the standard shocks are useless too compared to modestly decent after-market.

As far as gearing, it's definitely true that you'll have a peppier and quicker off the line truck with the 4.30s, but if you aren't going to go to bigger tires and a lift kit, (in my opinion) I would go with gearing that helps with better mileage. The range on these things isn't impressive at all, and anything you can do to get some extra miles out of a tank is a nicer luxury than trying to lay rubber at a stop light.

My .02 cents. Have fun with your project, trucks are awesome.

Fox ATS damper is still vaporware. As soon as they catch up, that's the one to get.

I'm going to 2.5 or 3.0's.

Yes and no, they have multiple spring configurations, and they also adjust gvwr based on the options you add to the truck. Xl has a higher gvwr that a similiar lariat.

He’s not speaking of payload. He’s speaking GVWR which is 10k, 9900, etc. Basically the total weight the truck is allowed to have on its axles including the weight of the truck. Both the Lariat and XL can have the same GVWR. Just the lariat will weigh more, so less payload left from that 10k etc.

The reason for the different GVWR is licensing. Some trucks may be physically rated much higher, but you can option to have the GVWR rated less to get by with cheaper insurance, license, etc.

OP you don’t want to chose the 9900 lb option if you plan on an in bed camper. Honestly you probably don’t want a 250 either. The 350 single wheel will give you much more payload legally, even though the truck can be equipped identically in a 250. An XL 250 crew long bed FX4 gasser will have approximately 3000 lbs of payload, or slightly more. An identical 350 version would have over 4000 lbs.

Oh yeah one of the biggest advantages of the long bed crew cab is the 48 gallon fuel tank. The short bed crew cab only has 34 gallon tank, but most report not being able to get more than 30 gallons in it. That extra 14 gallons makes a huge difference when pulling or carrying any significant weight.

I think mine is 38. Never get more than 30 in it. Some trucks can have a new sender installed that's more accurate. But IMO, running low fuel levels with an electric pump in the tank is bad mojo. Maybe under no load it's OK, but I'm not towing down to much less than 1/4 tank.
