For Those Of You With Aux Tanks???

I installed a Transferflow 50gal (with tool box on top) in the bed of our F250 in Oct '04 (7k miles on the truck) and have had no problems (now 47k miles).

The system monitors the level in the main tank and meters out about 4 gals at a time when necessary. There's a digital meter mounted on the dash which gives me gallons in the main, aux, and total.

We have an awesome road to travel when we go to Punta Bufeo, so I would think that any leaks or trouble spots would show themselves quickly (especially with diesel fuel).

I'm a proponent of auxiliary tanks rather than carrying Jerry cans or other such extra containers. I could have purchased a replacement tank for the OEM tank which would have given us substantially more than the 38-gal std tank, but I opted to lose a bit of storage space for the 88 gal capacity we now have.

With our present mpg, our range is over 1500 miles w/o a re-fill. When we left Prescott a couple of weeks ago my re-fill target was the Flying J T-stop in Twin Falls, ID, where fuel was 20¢/gal cheaper than here. Put 50 gals in (had almost 40 still in the tanks) and bought lunch with the savings.

Aux tank on my FZJ80

I have a MAF Aussie subtank tank on the 80 - 25 gallons. It has its own pump and internal measuring device. It is running in parallel to the main tank and uses a dash mounted subtank rocker switch on the dash. The fuel gauge and low level warning light read for whichever tank is currently selected. It also has a large can type filter (shared by the two tanks) mounted on the frame rail.

I don'r see anything unsafe about this set-up, and it is very easy to use - just flip the rocker switch.

Did I miss the point?

that is pretty much the setup i have, i am just curious if it is ok to transfer the fuel while driving "vs" pulling over to stop and transfer it without the vehicle running

I transfer "on the fly" I have been doing so for quite some time now. My auxilary tanks are perhaps rather crude, but functional. The Isuzu tank install was inspired by Mr. Brady's install.

I change tanks on the fly all the time. You may get a split second 'burp' or hesitation, but that has never been a problem. The fuel doesn't actually transfer from one to the other, it runs parallel fuel lines all the way to the engine. There are two in tank pumps.

Also wired so that the fuel gauge reads for the tank selected on the dash-mounted OEM switch which is lit when the sub-tank is selected.

I usually run the subtank until I get the warning light, then switch to the main tank.
