Ford’s new 6.8L V8

Man if I could actually get 15 mpg US out of a 6.8 or 7.3 Super Duty SCAB Short box 4x4 with a cab heigh commercial topper and 1500#+ of gear, I'd really question driving my Transit 250 3.7.

That's some decent mileage for a heavy, large square shaped vehicle.

What are you guys seeing stop and go with the 7.3 in the city?
I took a trip to northern Wisconsin a few months back. I left with the intention of getting the best fuel economy possible. I drove like there was an egg under my foot and never exceeded 69mph. I had 3 people in the truck and some basic luggage. I really tried very hard to drive super easy, I also stayed behind any semi truck I could find. I got 17 mpg hand calculated. This is not typical with my truck, usual7get 15-16 on the highway. I don’t feel this is bad for a large truck with the aerodynamics of a brick and I have 4:30 gears and 35’s.

What do you get in town?
I'd probably go with 3.73 for work and 33-34" narrower tires. They are tall enough already it's a ********** to get things out of the bed and off a roof rack when you are 5'7"

It was a soft top initially and then we drove one with a hard top. The hard top had a tad less road noise but not by much. The hard top didn’t appear to fit well, it rattled and had allot of wind noise, as in air leaks. Besides that, the fit and finish left allot to be desired, the doors felt cheap and didn’t fit and shut well. We drove one with the 2.7 and the other with the v6. 15 mpg was the 2.7 Sasquatch, on the highway it down shifted allot. The salesman has one with the v6, he confirmed 15-17 mpg on the highway, which is the same as my 7.3 f250. We were dead set on ordering one or buying the Sasquatch we drove. When we pulled into the dealer, my wife shifted it into park, I asked her what she thought, her response was simply “hell no”. I got to say, we were set on a new full size bronco, ready to buy one on the lot or order… I’m very glad we drove it for awhile.
Did you end up going with something else instead? JL?

No, she doesn’t really see anything she likes. I told her that her Tahoe has never had a single problem and we should just keep it. It’s starting to have some rust appear on the tailgate and it’s at 80k, and will be at 90 by the end of the summer and 100k by the end of winter. She’s afraid if the rust pops through on the tailgate it will loose value fast especially at 100k. Plus we are at 72 k on her Michelins and will need a set in 10k or so. My only gripe with the Tahoe, besides having no power, is that she drives so much on the highway back and from work it would be nice to get something better on fuel. With an online car seller offering her 41k cash for it, it’s hard not to sell it now and look for something else, especially since we paid 55k for it back in 17.

grand Cherokee? Exploder? 4 runner? I’m open to ideas.

The new Grands are nice. My sister in law just got rid of her Explorer due to the amount of issues she was having with it.
Highway cruiser... what about a Telluride?

Doubt a 4Runner would be any better on fuel than a Tahoe. The new Honda Pilots are pretty sharp - rated 19/25, 21 MPG combined.

My 21' f350 SCLB 7.3 with 4.30's, 33" Goodyear's and a Leer 122 cap sleeping setup 33,000 miles average is 15 mpg with my best tank coming in over 17.3 mpg hand calculated. So you can do it.

Local lots starting to have inventory, they refuse to move on price tho. Many still covered in snow.
Not a single extended cab anything in Ford lots I've seen. Just crew cabs.
This whole "pay MSRP plus and wait six months" thing is getting old.
And with the XL and STX trucks being so close in cost in comparison to the XLT, I still really don't see the point in the 6.8.

Crazy thing is, it's probably still cheaper to grab a '22 off the lot now than ordering.
If I ordered the exact same truck now that I did in Jan 2022, MSRP is 10K more!

Unless Ford just doesnt produce trucks at the rate they used to(supply/demand), someone is going to get screwed trying to ask these prices. Probably the dealers.
It's not just Ford though. All the trucks have gone up. I've priced out comparably equipped RAM's and GM's and they come out to about the same.
