My van has Warn 12k but there's plenty of "unstuck" in a 8k and a double pulley block. We're taking of a budget here. Lots of specials at three bills, I've used Mile Marker and Smittybilt with good results! I think There all made in China.

Sorry, I would go with a 12K winch on the E350 Airstream. I've got a couple of projects going on right now and I was thinking of a rally car when I commented on the 8K winch.

I leave tomorrow to go pick up the Airstream. The weather in Ohio will be good for a spell, so we'll put it to the test right away at Hocking Hills State Park and then again in Nashville, TN on the return trip. We're going to give the ol' Airstream a go and see how it fits the family and our needs, plus pay a visit to Chris and U-Joint's operations in May. Then we'll decide whether to go 4X4 or not. I really need to look at the costs. I'm a mechanic and can do all of the install myself. I thought the cost was up around $10K, but if I can get the parts for just $5K I might bite the bullet and go that route.

I live about 40 min from Hocking Hills. Up here there's no such thing as a weather "prediction" till at least June. :)

Bottom line, I think if I want a semi-decent overland rig, then I'm going to have to look at the U-Joint 4X4 kit a lot more seriously because it's clear to me that if you want to do anything other than fire roads, gravel roads, or anything with an incline, then you're really going to need 4X4 sooner or later.

I just wanted to follow up and share where life has led me. My wife and I picked up the Airstream in March and immediately put it to use with a nice camping trip to Hocking Hills in Ohio. That was followed by an epic two week trip in May to New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Arkansas where we did a ton of hiking and exploring with our one year old son. The Airstream was really fantastic. But it's so heavy and cumbersome on the road, I just could not imagine what it would be like off-road, even with a 4X4 system. I could see the cabinets flying open and dishes getting broken. I could see us bottoming out on the black water tank!!! Naw, I just couldn't see that happening, not for running things like the local K-Trail in Oklahoma that is barely wide enough for a Jeep!

I still think the perfect vehicle for us would be a Sportsmobile or Jeep JK Unlimited with Ursa Minor pop-top and kitchen. However, those are way, way out of our price range. What we compromised on is this Jeep TJ Unlimited with roof top tent and rear kitchen.

Barely big enough for our small family of three, but more than capable of going anywhere we want! The wife still wants to keep the B-190 though for more relaxed and comfortable on-road vacations. Works for me!
