Ford F700 Build

LowTech

Dirt Track Traveler
I have probs w/ stuff low on the sides of my off-road trucks. But then I live in the rocks. I'm pulling the fuel tank, spare, and steps off my M35. I'll raise the steps and put them back on about a foot higher. The tank will go into the bed along w/ the spare.
I find that w/ the bigger turn radius I'm more likely to rip that stuff open, or hang it up, then I am to catch my diff or T case.

Guess it all depends on where you're going to take it.

I added two storage boxes underneath the camper, a window, and a pop top. Next I will fabricate a storage box in the gap between the camper and the truck which will house two wind generators.

This is a really interesting build. Wind generators? I don't think I understand this...I liked your bathroom shower idea for this space. I think it would be (relatively) easy and compact.

Neat how they used doors from the f350 crewcabs as the basis for the f700 doors.

The gap width turned out narrower than expected. I am left with 19" width. That would have been a tight space to utilize as a bathroom. I decided not to have a dedicated bathroom. The side door entrance area will transform into the bathroom. A portable toilet will slide out of the closet next to the door and a shower head will be installed so you can shower in the doorway or outside of the camper. This setup gives me significantly more bathroom space while allowing for a new storage area. The roof of the storage area will open like a lid to allow the two wind generators to rise up. I have a davit that will assist me in lifting them up. The davit will also lift up the small sailboat we will be taking onto the roof of the truck cab.

Speed!!

My 1994 truck has a 5.9 Cummins with a 5.29 gear ratio. It drives 55mph:mad: and sometimes I can hit 60mph. I want to be able to at least drive 70mph. What can I do to increase my top speed capacity.

Are you rpm or power limited? Assuming rpm limited,

(1) increase engine rpm - possible, depending on what rpm you currently turning, but not the best option if the engine is already turning "high" rpms. There are tons of articles on tuning old 12V Cummins.
(2) put on larger diameter tires - the same rpm will get you more speed. Probably the simplest solution, given that it looks like a taller tire would fit.
(3) re-gear both differentials. It depends on what available for your axles.
(4) aftermarket overdrive either between the transmission and transfercase, or even after the transfer case. If after the transfer case, it wouldn't work in 4wd but I doubt the added top speed is needed then. Either way, generally not cheap.

Which one of these options would give me more bang for the buck?

I would save for some kind of over drive.. in the long run it will have the most benefits. everything you do to get your truck to go faster off the same engine RPM's will result in sacrificing performance somewhere else in the RPM range...ie. bigger tires give you more top end..but can hinder low speed performance.

When I repowered my FERD Motorhome from gas to diesel, I regeared the diff to 3:56's but the 4 speed Allison tranny was still one gear short for highway driving.
So I bought this to put behind it.
Spicer58314.jpg

It's a 5831 Spicer Aux transmission. Made to mount between the transmission and the rear diff. If you have a divorced transfer case on your expedition rig you can put it between the transfer case and the tranny giving you a double underdrive when combined with the trasfer case reduction gear set
This one is a three speed with a .73 overdrive, a 1:1 2nd gear and a 2:00 under drive.
It came out of a 60's model truck and is built to handle heavy truck loads.
It had been freshly rebuilt before I got it.
The drive shaft flanges were the most expensive part. I have about $1700. in it so far.
I went this way because the Gear Vendor tailshaft overdrives won't handle the horsepower I had or loads this one will behind my Allison. My 5.9L Cummins with the "P" pump has been bumped up to 350 HP. So that's why the monster truck gears.

Just an option I thought I'd throw out there for you.

roof deck

I am thinking about putting a deck over the crew cab to lounge on. Those of you that have traveled would this be well used or a wasted effort? Or would a back deck be better?
