I like it, for one guy... it has everything you need. Whats the green thing on top?

looks a little cramped for two...

I like (and use) this style:

http://www.highinfatuation.com/blog/dirtbagging-101/

The shelf is just so flexible, and it's SO comfortable for two people to live in there. Or 1 + dog if you like.

Thanks for the link.. I'll have to try the shelf idea..

How is the shelf stabilized while driving? Also you have some sort of thick padding for the bed? It would be awfully uncomfortable to sleep on the bed ribs.

I was thinking home-made plywood john boat. Looks like wheels for rolling to the lake, and a fold down rudder?

I really like the camper shell idea! Would be cool to update it a little with a small engel fridge and some LED lighting.

That's pretty much what the back of my old Tacoma looked like except the right side was open. I slept in the middle, kept my clothes and gear in the front right and had a water jug and cooler near the tailgate. A hanging net works well for keeping things like bread from getting squished. I tried the shelf thing as in that other article, but prefer my head towards the front for whatever reason (it's easier to stealth camp for one as you can hide your presence more effectively). I could sleep two in it but it was crowded. Since I usually travel alone it worked fine for me.

I'm making/modifying an existing system aht if I'm imagining correctly is the same thing, but for things like Jsckets and other soft goods like extra blankets, pants?shirts for when werew sleeping. I empty it when driing though because it blocks my view too much, but it's nice to have your pants and a down jacket handy for those midnight bathroom runs eh ;) I'm modifying mine by mounting my Basket rack through the fiberglass roof of my 1st Gen 4Runner and putting rings through the interior parts of the brackets and then having the net attatch to that by way of small "key-chain" caribiners. I can't wait to have the new set-up worked out and rwady to roll cause I'm rewally liking the current set-up but this will work ten times better.

next up: Velcro attachment curtaqins of some yet to be determined thick canvas with some ability to add on some thicker material onto them for winter insulation. Oh and a roll up curtain to divide the pqassenger cab from the rear bed section. Probably with a split down the middle so it can be rolled up and installed permenantly without making the view out the back inposible by having a big roll right behind my head that's 4-6" thinck. So maybe split it down the middle and have the middle 3 or so inches not be attached so they can be folded in then rolled up like a soft-top side window section but with a nice 6" gap so I could still use my rear view mirror.

AS it is, twith my set-up I have a very good vies out the back. I use "action Packers" to pack gear/clothes bedding and then my large watter jug and several Ammo-cans for straps etc. Things lik the camp chairs, roll-a-tables and the flat 10gal "boat" fuel tank go up in the roof to keep things from piling up into my vision. The futon folds up (fold in the center of the truck bed, both ends pointing towards the cab with a ratchet strap around it for quick deployment) and only stands as tall as maybe a few (6) inches lower then the top of the front passenger seat backs.

I really need to get some pics of everything loaded up and then our camp set-up.

I also gotta find one of those old cardboard "window Shields" that evfryone had to keep the sun out of their cars back in the day. That'd make me dam near invisible when pqarked/camped in a place where low key is a necessity
\Oh yeah and off my rack I made some poles that I attatch a tarp to for colder/wetter weather so as to cover the tailgate/close the rear end in but still allow the 116lb Bernese mt. Dog (Louie) to sleep on the tail gate near his people (aka the pack) but still be covered in the event of rain. plus when tied/staked down it makes a great makeshift awning for cooking under on the tail-gate or to sit under if it rains (never does here in the NW ; ) Also nice to be able to leave your boots out and ready to step into for those aforementioned midnight bathroom runs eh. I need to think up some sides for when it's REALLY blowing in sideways, but it holds up WELL in the wind and if it's that bad, were switching on the GPS/weather motification function and heading to better weather anyway. It only takes about 20-30 min to fully pack up and get out of dodge for us with this set-up and een less time to set it all up.

All in all I haven't spent much more then $500 on the full set-up (not including the truck and mech. mods for her, just the sleeping/living set-up and all in all it's pretty comfy. yeah I need to build a sleeping platform to get some of my recovery gear and tools stowed better, but for now, on the cheap it's working like a dream. I truly LOVE this truc. So tough, so capable off-road and so utilitarian (haul a couple thousand pounds of wood one day tehn take'r into the back country the next judt that dimoke.

PLUS, only having two doors and two seats always works out when I just don't want to drive someone home or take them somewhere eh. yeah, I'm that guy. I lie it just me, the GF and the dog in my rig. I'll always lend a hand to those in need, but if I can avoid it I like to travel and be responsible for those people and myself that I know intimatly and can predict/trust what they are going to do. So that pretty much leaves me and the GF and the dog eh.

Cheers

Dave

5" ikea foam mattress with fitted zippered cotton cover, cut down to fit perfect between the wheel wells, with a few thermarest camping matts underneath

the shelf is 2x10 planks with gray industrial carpet stapled on, with huge patches of velcro stapled on top of that. the velcro holds the planks down to the Leer interior flocking in everything I've tried yet, but for ultimate security you'd strap them to the load attachments on the rail directly below them. I use rafting cam-straps to hold crates in place on the shelf.

also re: stealth in a couple different posts above: I cut lengths of black felt to black out the windows. buy some self-stick velcro, cut out some lengths of the hook-side to stick around the window frames, and the felt sticks to the hooks by itself. I black out all the windows while I'm in there, and I don't usually bother to take down the rear window felt any more even for driving.
