Four Wheel Camper 300' Rollover

My response had everything to do with Photobug's post, not armchair QB'ing everything the guy did or didn't do to your standard of recklessness.

Over and out.....
Sorry if my comment seemed inappropriate. I feel bad for the guy it happened to. But the original post suggested this is something FWC should use in their advertising. This photo does not say to me "Buy a Four Wheel Camper."

I drive an old Dodge Diesel and am very careful to not hurt it or get it into a place it can't handle. I could afford a nicer newer capable truck but would likely be even more cautious if I had 3-4 times the money invested in my rig.

Coincidentally I just started a thread on the vertical COG of FWCs on a Norweld tray and rollover risk. I'm looking to buy a used rig, not as built as this guy's. Sorry for his experience, and glad he's OK. Does't sound like his issue was being too tall and unstable but I'm wondering if others with flatbed campers can chime in on the side to side COG and tippy factor on off camber roads/trails?

Safety is way over rated IMO. I'd get rid of all that stuff if I had the option.

You take reasonable precautions, try not to be stupid, and let the chips fall where they may. None of us makes it out alive. When your number is up, there are millions of ways for it to happen... and rolling your vehicle off a cliff isn't even in the top million.

If applied that logic my wife and infant daughter would be dead at the hands of an intoxicated driver. Thanks to a vehicle with a 5 star safety rating they survived.

I've responded to enough MVAs to know that modern safety features absolitely reduce injuries and save lifes. One of the major reasons that I bought an F150 instead of a Tundra is due to the safety rating. I've seen first hand the abuse that they can take and still protect the passengers.

My take on this was don’t drive a shelf road and if ya do make sure you carry a truck pistol to blow out the air bags and windows. Or tape a window punch to the steering wheel.

Uhhhh...you do realize that the airbags automatically deflate.

It's the COG of the whole rig that matters, and the camper is a tiny fraction of that.

COG has nothing to do with the incident in this thread... he ran off the road trying to avoid trees branches.

The irony is he totalled his rig trying to save it from cosmetic damage.

As much as I pamper my vehicles... I'd take scratches over destroying it anyday...lol.

Nope, didn’t know that. Thought I read he couldn’t get out of the vehicle because of the air bags.

They deflate. The side curtain airbags hang down and when they are deflated they can still be an obstacle if you are disoriented since they block the side windows.

You know how bad those tree scratches will make your rig look?;)

I would say the size of the rig did potentially have a factor in this accident. If the rig is narrower or lighter, the accident might not have happened. These are all factors in going from a Tacoma to a monster truck with a camper on top.

He was on 1 week vacation at a remote cabin without internet... in the rain (check weather forecast?). Wanted internet access... and attempted to drive to the top of a mountain in mud to get it. Didn't want to scratch his camper on tree branches, and ran off the road. I see several questionable items related to judgement.
I must say we have all been there, done that. He got bitten. There but for the grace of god go you or I..... Altho I do not dodge branches.
