I don't know if you can get them elsewhere, but here's a site where you can download up-to-date BC, Canada topos. They're in pdf format, and georeferenced, at 1:20k. They open and work well, with georeferencing intact, in Avenza's PDF-Map app. Very pretty.

Dunno if the 1:20ks are available anywhere for AB; maybe our Canadian friends can enlighten us.

I use it with Google Earth (download the kmz file) it works great. For Alberta, the closest thing that I have been able to find is a GPS Map Pilot Project from Environment and Sustainable Resource Development. So far it only works with Gramin GPS, here's the link:
