The primary issue with cooling off level is that the fridge uses gravity to return the condensed refrigerant back to the heating reservoir. Assuming a cleaning and inspection ever couple years, you should have no problem identifying flame erosion of the heating coils in the burner.

Yes, the cooling packages do rupture in campers, not just boats. My grandparents have had 1 spray ammonia rather violently. Just like other pressurized gas systems (air conditioning, pneumatic tools, tires) leaks can and do happen.



Do what now?
I mean in a boat propane has additional safety worries because you are generally below water and can’t just vent out to the side and below, and any leaking ammonia would also go along with that theory. So that’s why propane is much less commonly seen on boats.

That is one issue. Since flames naturally go straight up, they really don't work well to heat the coils when they're not level. Absorption fridges actually do handle off-level use better on AC than propane. Noticeably so.
