Fuel pump replacement

I have a 2000 Tacoma that has 257,000 miles. I currently have NO issues!! Just trying to stay ahead of trouble. Now to the question, who has changed the fuel pump on there Tacoma and what was the approximate milage? Curious if I should just go ahead and replace it. I have owned the truck since new and have replaced the fuel filter every 40,000 miles. This might be uncharted territory. Who said Toyota has quality issues!

Toyota fuel pumps are not known for having issues. That said, unless you can hear an audible buzzing in/near the tank area, leave it alone. But they are relatively easy to replace. Just make sure your tank is near empty, remove the skid plate, drop the tank down by removing the 2 steel straps, and the pump is in the top round access hole. Replace with toyota part - simple.

On Thursday I found the life limit for my fuel pump on my 2000 Tacoma, 270,500 miles 11 years 10 months. It failed on the way to work, better than at the PNW Rally I had just returned from! So if your rig has between 225,000 - 250,000 I would replace it! Better to replace it in the driveway than breaking down on the freeway like me (on a bridge minamal shoulder).

So it sounds like I've got 100k to go :smiley_drive: The Rally was hard on my truck too... my truck was having problems starting and idling. We spent yesterday morning removing the throttle body and IAC valve (which were both far dirtier than I would like to see).

Drop me a line if you want a hand replacing your fuel pump, you should still have my number in your PM box.

Thanks for the offer! Unfortunately it stalled on the middle of the Snohomish River bridge I-5 South bound and traffic was heavy. The tow job home was 300.00 or per my insurance the closest repair facility 100.00. Its at Rodland Toyota in Everett, the extra cost I would of had to pay for towing to get it home almost covers the labor. So a 300.00 dollar job turns into 600.00

Dude... AAA Plus. Even if you don't use the tow (100mi), you can completely renew your map collection every year :) Not to mention all the discounts available for everything.

When I picked up my Taco from the dealer on Monday it was idling high, about 2200 RPM. This was of course after they had replaced the pump. I did not have a high idle issue prior to the fuel pump failure. They didn't offer any clues without the 90.00 troubleshooting charge. So I went on line and found a few items to check, resistance check on the idle air control valve (good) and a ops check of the valve itself (failed to move). Ordered a I.A.C. valve from TRDparts4u.com it arrived on Saturday and installed it today. Works like a champ! The part, gaskets and shipping was 208.80 the dealer wanted over 300.00 for just the valve! Odd to have the valve fail the same time as the pump but with 270,000 miles this truck owes me nothing and glad that it was a solid fix!

Louis you were right the amount of crap in the throttle body was surprising! Cleaning it I am sure helped things as well! I am excited to check my fuel economy this week!
